1-Day Gorilla Trek in Uganda Starting from Kigali

Are you dreaming of a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda starting from Kigali, Rwanda? Whether you’re already in Rwanda and want to experience Uganda’s incredible wildlife or you’re exploring Kigali before heading into the wild, Trek Africa Gorillas can help you plan a seamless and unforgettable 1-day gorilla trekking trip to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is known for its stunning landscapes, clean cities and well-organized infrastructure. The northern, western and eastern borders of Rwanda are particularly dramatic, making the journey to Uganda as picturesque as it is exciting.

Why Choose a Gorilla Trekking Trip?

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of Africa’s most sought-after wildlife adventures. Despite the high costs and the challenges of hiking through dense forests, rugged terrain and occasionally wet conditions, the reward of standing just meters away from endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is unmatched.

What to Expect During Gorilla Trekking

• Hiking through thick forests, crossing rivers and navigating challenging terrain in search of gorilla families.
• Spending one magical hour observing these incredible creatures in their natural surroundings.
• For a more immersive experience, opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, which offers 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group.

Where Can You Trek Gorillas in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is possible in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), home to the world’s only remaining mountain gorillas. The main parks for trekking include:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Uganda)
2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda)
3. Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
4. Virunga National Park (DRC)

In addition, Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the DRC offers the opportunity to see lowland gorillas.

Booking Your Gorilla Permit: What You Need to Know

A gorilla trekking permit is required to participate in this activity. Due to high demand, especially during the peak season from June to September, it’s best to book your permit at least 5 months in advance. Trek Africa Gorillas can assist you with securing permits and planning every detail of your trip.

Cost of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• Residents: $700 per person per trek
• East African Citizens: $80 per person per trek (for citizens of Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and South Sudan)

Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla families (16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga), allowing for 136 trekking permits daily. For those wanting more time with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience costs $1,500 per person and provides 4 hours with a semi-habituated group under the guidance of researchers and trackers.

Age Requirements and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years and the maximum age depends on individual fitness levels.

For older travelers or those with limited mobility, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi Forest. These chairs, carried by skilled porters, allow anyone to experience gorilla trekking without the physical strain. The cost of hiring a sedan chair ranges from $400 to $500 and they can be booked in advance or on the day of the trek.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy in Uganda

If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure, obtaining a gorilla permit is essential. These permits allow you to trek in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. However, once a permit is booked, it is highly recommended to use it on the scheduled date.

Cancellation Policy: Gorilla permit cancellation policies in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo are quite strict. If you need to cancel your permit within 0 to 8 days of your trek, no refunds are given. This is the standard policy across all three countries.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking from Kigali: When to Plan Your Trip

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an incredible experience that can be done year-round but some times are better than others. The best time to do gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is during the drier months, typically from January, February and from June to early September.

During these months, travel to the park is easier and the vegetation is less dense, offering better visibility of the gorillas. The trails are also less slippery, making your trek more comfortable and enjoyable.
