Detailed Itinerary: Your 1-Day Gorilla Trekking from Kigali to Buhoma

On this exciting day trip, your adventure begins with a 4:00 AM pick-up from your Kigali hotel. You’ll drive through scenic landscapes, crossing the Katuna border into Uganda before continuing to the Buhoma sector. After a briefing at 8:00 AM, your gorilla trek will start. The trek typically ends between 2:00 and 4:00 PM, after which you’ll head back to Kigali, with a drop-off either at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. The Buhoma sector is easily accessible via Kabale, making it a convenient option for those traveling from Kigali.

Explore the Buhoma Sector: Gorilla Families and Luxury Lodging

Buhoma, located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is one of the most famous and visited sectors. It was the first to be habituated in 1993, just after the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Buhoma is home to some of the park’s oldest and most well-known gorilla families, including Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe.

This sector attracts many visitors year-round, even during the off-peak seasons, due to its accessibility and the presence of top-tier lodges like Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp and Bwindi Lodge, both located within the forest. Buhoma is also known for offering a high level of luxury accommodations compared to other sectors, making it a great choice for travelers seeking comfort and exceptional experiences.

Important Planning Tips for Your 1-Day Gorilla Trekking in Buhoma

Book Your Gorilla Permits Early

To ensure a smooth experience, we recommend booking your gorilla permits at least 3 to 4 months before your travel date. Gorilla permits for the Buhoma sector tend to sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. The cost for permits is as follows:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800
• Foreign Residents: $700
• East African Citizens: 300,000 UGX

Permits allow you to spend one hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat. For more details on securing your permit, feel free to contact us.

Luxury Accommodation Choices in Buhoma

For a premium gorilla trekking experience, consider staying at one of the luxury lodges in the Buhoma sector. Some of the finest options include:

• Bwindi Lodge
• Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp
• Mahogany Springs
• Silverback Lodge

These lodges offer a comfortable stay and an immersive experience in Bwindi’s pristine rainforest, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Travel Comfortably to Buhoma

For your journey to Buhoma, we recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser for comfort on the road. Alternatively, you can opt for a quicker route by flying to Kihihi Airstrip, which is just a short drive (about 1 hour) from Buhoma. This option reduces the long drive from Entebbe/Kampala (8-9 hours) to just a 1-hour transfer from the airstrip to your lodge.

What to Pack and Wear for Your Gorilla Trekking Day Trip

• Long-sleeve sweater (the weather can be cold)
• Two pairs of long trousers
• Waterproof hiking boots
• Hat and sunglasses (optional, depending on the weather)
• Camera with long-lasting batteries (remember to turn off the flash)
• Binoculars for birdwatching and spotting other primates
• Gardening gloves (for holding onto trees and branches during the trek)
• Raincoat (since the rainforest can experience unpredictable showers)
• Mosquito repellent
• Sunscreen (optional, depending on the season)
• Neutral colors (avoid bright colors, black and blue as they attract Tsetse flies and may disturb the gorillas)
