Why Choose Gorilla Trekking? Experience Africa’s Majestic Primates

Gorilla trekking in Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that draws nature enthusiasts from all over the world. Despite the costs, physical challenges and time required, the reward of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is unmatched.

This immersive activity involves hiking through dense forests, navigating rugged terrain and crossing rivers or swamps as you search for these endangered giants. The trek can be physically demanding, so a reasonable level of fitness is necessary. Upon encountering a gorilla family, you’ll have a magical hour to observe and connect with them in their natural environment.

For those seeking an even deeper experience, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family alongside researchers and trackers.

Where to Trek Gorillas in Africa: Top Locations Explained

Gorilla trekking is available in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The main trekking locations include:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas)

Starting your trek from Kigali is a convenient option, especially for those on a tight schedule. Bwindi and Mgahinga, Uganda’s top gorilla trekking destinations, are only a short drive from Kigali. However, it’s crucial to secure a gorilla permit in advance, as these tend to sell out quickly, particularly during the peak season (June to September). Booking at least five months ahead is recommended.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Costs: What You Need to Know

Uganda offers some of the most affordable gorilla trekking permits:

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents
• $700 per person for foreign residents
• $80 per person for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan)

Each permit allows one hour with the gorillas. For those opting for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, the cost is $1,500 per person, offering up to four hours with the gorillas.

Permits can be booked directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or via a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Who Can Participate in Gorilla Trekking? Age and Accessibility

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on an individual’s fitness level. For older or less mobile travelers, sedan chairs carried by skilled porters are available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. These can be hired for $400–$500, making the trek accessible to everyone.

What Happens If You Cancel Your Gorilla Permit?

Gorilla permits are non-refundable if canceled less than 8 days before the trek.

Best Time for a 1-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda, whether in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, is available all year round. However, the best time to embark on a gorilla trekking adventure is during the dry seasons, which occur from January to February and June to early September.

During these months, the trails are drier and easier to navigate, making the journey more comfortable. Additionally, the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
