Must-Do Activities on a 1-Day Gorilla Trip in Bwindi

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: Meet the Mountain Gorillas

Gorilla trekking is the main attraction in Bwindi. With over 50% of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, the park offers a rare opportunity to see these majestic creatures in the wild. Trekking through the lush forest, you’ll have a 98% chance of encountering gorillas in their natural environment.

Bwindi has four trekking sectors—Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Buhoma—so you can choose the sector that best suits your travel plans. A key requirement for gorilla trekking is obtaining a gorilla permit, which should be booked in advance. Each family of gorillas allows only eight trekkers per day, so securing a permit early is crucial for a successful trek.

Once you book your 1-day gorilla trip with Trek Africa Gorillas, we’ll handle all the details. Simply provide your preferred travel dates and we’ll check permit availability, secure your permit and send you payment details. After receiving your payment, we’ll finalize the booking and send you the official permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Gorilla Habituation Experience: A Deeper Connection with Gorillas

For those looking for something more immersive, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This special activity allows you to spend four hours with gorillas in the process of being habituated to humans. The experience is exclusive, with only four people allowed per session.

This activity is available in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors in the southern part of Bwindi. The experience involves tracking gorillas that are still adjusting to human presence, so you’ll see them in a more natural, wild state. You’ll observe their feeding, movement and behavior, all while accompanied by experienced researchers and guides.

Bird Watching in Bwindi: Explore a Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Bwindi is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. The park is home to numerous unique species, including the Albertine Rift Endemic birds. Some of the exciting species to spot during your visit include:

• Handsome Francolin
• Rwenzori Nightjar
• Dwarf Honeyguide
• African Green Broadbill
• Mountain Masked Apalis

With the help of professional birding guides, you’ll have the chance to identify over 350 bird species while exploring the park’s diverse habitats. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a casual observer, Bwindi offers an unforgettable birding experience.

Cultural and Community Experiences in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers much more than just gorilla trekking. The region is also rich in cultural and community experiences that give you a deeper connection to the area. The Batwa people, often referred to as pygmies, once lived in Bwindi’s forest for generations. However, to help conserve the mountain gorillas and promote sustainable tourism, the Batwa were relocated to nearby communities.

Today, a visit to Bwindi allows you to discover the Batwa’s unique way of life. You’ll learn about how they lived in the forest, their traditional methods of hunting, gathering wild honey and their vibrant cultural dances. You’ll also see how the Batwa have adapted to life outside the forest, sharing stories of their transition.

In addition to the Batwa, you can explore the surrounding communities, where local women’s groups create crafts and sell food. Visiting local schools is also an enriching experience—if you’re interested, consider bringing donations such as clothes or school supplies to support the children.

Nature and Forest Walks in Bwindi: Discover the Ancient Rainforest

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, forest walks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are a must. This tropical rainforest, one of the world’s oldest, has been thriving for over 250,000 years and is home to ancient tree species, some of which are endemic to the area.

The dense canopy makes Bwindi a truly “impenetrable” forest, providing an exciting backdrop for guided nature walks. During your walk, you’ll have the chance to learn about the different types of trees, spot a variety of bird species and, if you’re lucky, see wildlife such as forest elephants, monkeys and baboons.

We offer various walking packages through Bwindi’s sectors—from the Buhoma sector to Nkuringo—including scenic routes that pass through the Ivy River and Kashasha trail. These walks also offer the chance to visit waterfalls and rivers, bringing you even closer to the park’s natural beauty. We can tailor these walks to suit your specific interests and needs.
