On this thrilling one-day excursion, you’ll embark on an early morning drive from Kigali at 4 AM, crossing into Uganda to experience an unforgettable gorilla trek in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Trek Africa Gorillas will handle all the logistics, ensuring you have a seamless and memorable experience.

Why Choose a Gorilla Trekking Tour in Uganda from Kigali?

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most breathtaking wildlife encounters, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives of endangered mountain gorillas. Despite the cost, physical effort and time commitment, the experience of observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is unparalleled.

Trekking through Uganda’s lush forests involves navigating thick vegetation, steep slopes, rivers and swamps. It’s a physically demanding but deeply rewarding adventure, allowing you to spend one full hour with a gorilla family. If you’re looking for a longer encounter, Bwindi Forest offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to four hours with the gorillas alongside researchers.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is available in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The four national parks that protect the last remaining mountain gorillas are:

• Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
• DR Congo: Virunga National Park

Additionally, in the DRC, you can also see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

To go gorilla trekking, you must obtain a gorilla permit, which allows you access to one of these parks. Since permits sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (June to September), we recommend booking at least five months in advance.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Prices

Uganda offers more affordable gorilla trekking compared to Rwanda. Here’s a breakdown of the permit costs:

• $800 per person – Foreign non-residents
• $700 per person – Foreign residents
• $80 per person – East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan)

For those interested in the extended Gorilla Habituation Experience, the permit costs $1,500 per person, granting you a four-hour immersive experience with semi-habituated gorillas.

You can book your permit directly through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or let Trek Africa Gorillas handle the entire booking process for a hassle-free experience.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is available year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:

• January – February
• June – September

During these months, travel conditions are easier and the forest is less dense, improving visibility for photography and wildlife encounters.

Essential Packing List for Your Gorilla Trek in Uganda

To have a comfortable and enjoyable trek, we recommend packing the following items:

• Hiking boots – Essential for the rugged terrain
• Long-sleeved shirts and trousers – Protects against insects and thorny plants
• Rain jacket – Weather in the forest can be unpredictable
• Hat & sunscreen – Protect against sun exposure
• Gardening gloves – Useful for gripping trees and plants
• Insect repellent – Essential for protection against bites
• Binoculars – Great for spotting birds and other wildlife
• Camera (no flash) – Capture incredible moments without disturbing the gorillas
• Water bottle & snacks – Stay hydrated during the trek

Gorilla Trekking Age Limit and Accessibility

The minimum age requirement for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years. The maximum age depends on physical fitness levels. For elderly travelers or those with mobility challenges, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi Forest, where porters can carry you to and from the forest for $400–$500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

Gorilla permit cancellations in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo generally do not qualify for refunds if canceled less than 8 days before the trek.
