Arrival and Preparation: Day 0 in Tanzania

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where an Trek Africa Gorillas driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. You’ll receive a briefing on the upcoming trek and have time to rest before the adventure begins.

Complete Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

• Elevation: 1,830m to 2,700m
• Distance: 8 km
• Hiking Time: 3–5 hours

After breakfast, take a short drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance. The hike starts through dense rainforest where you may spot monkeys and vibrant birdlife. Arrive at Mandara Hut by late afternoon, with an option to explore the nearby Maundi Crater before settling in for the night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

• Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
• Distance: 12 km
• Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Leaving the rainforest, trek into moorland dominated by giant heather and lobelia plants. Enjoy increasingly impressive views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks as you ascend to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night above the clouds.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

• Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
• Distance: 9 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Today’s trek crosses the barren “Saddle,” a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air grows thinner as you approach Kibo Hut, your final stop before the summit attempt. Rest well for the early climb tomorrow.

Day 4: Summit Day (Uhuru Peak) and Descent to Horombo Hut

• Elevation: 4,700m to 5,896m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
• Distance: 6 km ascent, 15 km descent
• Hiking Time: 11–15 hours

Begin your summit attempt at around 1:00 AM, climbing steep switchbacks under the starry sky. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) by sunrise, enjoying breathtaking views. Those with energy can continue to Uhuru Peak (5,896m), Africa’s highest point! After celebrating, descend back to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Moshi

• Elevation: 3,720m to 1,830m
• Distance: 20 km
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest, returning to Marangu Gate. Here, you’ll receive a certificate for your achievement before heading back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

Departure Day: Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport
