Tour Plan
Nyakalengija (1,700m) to John Matte Hut (3,420m)
Your 5-Day Mountain Rwenzori Hiking adventure begins at Nyakalengija, where you will receive a briefing and pick up your hiking gear. Accompanied by guides and porters, you will start your trek through local settlements, tropical forests, montane forests, bamboo forests, and part of the alpine zone. A stopover at Nyabitaba Hut for lunch precedes your continuation through the Kurt Schaffer Bridge at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers. You'll reach John Matte Hut for dinner and overnight.

John Matte to Elena Hut (4,563m)
After breakfast, you will traverse rocky and slippery terrain, crossing rivers and streams. Along the way, you’ll catch distant views of the Margherita and Alexandra peaks. The hike continues through the lower Bigo Bog, where boardwalks facilitate movement, showcasing various plants like giant lobelias, groundsels, and everlasting flowers. You’ll ascend the rocky slopes of Mount Stanley, arriving at Elena Hut for dinner and overnight.

Elena to Bujuku Camp (3,930m) – Hiking to the Top
An early start at around 2:00 AM, equipped with hiking gear and headlamps, begins your ascent through the rocky landscape. Ropes will be used in some areas, leading you to the Stanley Glacier, where crampons may be required. After navigating the glacier, you’ll reach the Margherita Glacier, culminating in the summit at Margherita Peak, the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Elena Hut for lunch before continuing to Bujuku Camp for dinner and overnight.

Bujuku to Nyabitaba Hut (2,660m)
After breakfast at Bujuku, you will descend through the upper and lower Bigo Bogs, stopping for lunch at John Matte Hut. The journey continues down to Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight..

Nyabitaba back to Nyakalengija
Following breakfast at Nyabitaba, you’ll continue your descent through bamboo forests, navigating slippery and muddy paths that require careful balance. After approximately 5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Nyabitaba Hut for a lunch break before completing the final 3-hour descent to Nyakalengija.
Upon arrival in Nyakalengija, you may choose to return to Kampala, spend the night in Kasese town, or explore other safari options like gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Your 5-Day Mountain Rwenzori Hiking experience concludes with your transfer back to Kampala or Entebbe.

Can I reschedule or cancel this trip?
- Rescheduling: You can reschedule this trip as a private tour to any date within 12 months at no additional cost.
- Booking Deposit: A 30% deposit of the total tour price is required to secure your booking. The remaining balance is due 45 days before the tour departure date. Bookings not secured with the appropriate deposit will be released.
- Cancellation Policy:
- Cancel between 90 and 45 days before departure: 20% penalty of the tour price.
- Cancel within 45 days of departure or no show: 100% penalty of the tour price.
Availability and Accommodations
- Reservations: Accommodation and activity availability is not guaranteed until reservations are confirmed with the final itinerary and deposit payment. If any quoted accommodations are unavailable, we reserve the right to substitute them with suitable alternatives, which may affect the final quoted price.
Insurance
- Requirement: All clients must have medical and travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances.
Rates
- Subject to Change: Tour rates are subject to change without notice. We will make every effort to maintain rates, but changes in government taxes or operating conditions may be passed on to clients.
Permit Cancellation Policy
Uganda Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy
- Guarantee: A Gorilla Permit is guaranteed only upon receipt of the deposit ($800 per person per trek) as it must be paid immediately to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Cancellation Fees
- More than 90 days before tracking: 25% cancellation fee.
- 89 to 46 days before tracking: 50% cancellation fee.
- 45 to 9 days before tracking: 75% cancellation fee.
- 8 to 0 days before tracking: 100% cancellation fee.
Important Information
- Age Requirement: The minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years.
- Health: Visitors with flu or other airborne diseases will not be allowed into the rainforest jungle to see the gorillas.
- Safety Protocols: Masks must be worn at all times, and a distance of 10 meters must be maintained between you and the gorillas.
