Our 4 Day Mgahinga Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari offers a unique adventure in the serene Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda. Though small and often overlooked by tourists, this park is the only one in Uganda where mountain gorillas coexist with golden monkeys, giving rise to the saying, “where Gold meets Silver.” At Trek Africa Expeditions, we have designed this 4 Day Mgahinga Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari for those with limited time who still wish to trek mountain gorillas and participate in either the golden monkey habituation experience or golden monkey trekking. The safari begins and ends in Entebbe, with a stop at the Equator for a photo opportunity.

TRIP ITINERARY

Tour Plan

Day 1

Pick Up from the Airport/Hotel to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Your journey begins as our driver-guide picks you up from your overnight hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. After a briefing about your trip and ensuring you have all necessary gear and paperwork, you will set off for Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda. The drive includes stops at Mpambire to observe traditional drum-making and at the Equator for a photo opportunity. Lunch will be in Mbarara at Agip Motel or Igongo Cultural Center, depending on the time available. The scenic drive continues through the flatlands of Ntungamo, the rolling hills of Kabale, and the terraced landscapes of Kisoro District. You will arrive at your lodge in time for a brief relaxation, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the Mgahinga National Park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing. Your passport details will be checked to confirm your eligibility for the trek, followed by an orientation from a UWA ranger covering the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. You will then embark on a trek through the forest in search of the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the only habituated group in Mgahinga. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing them before returning to your lodge for the night.

Day 3

Golden Monkey Experience or Golden Monkey Trekking

After breakfast, you will transfer to the Mgahinga National Park headquarters for either a full-day golden monkey habituation experience or a half-day golden monkey trekking. Following a briefing on the dos and don’ts while with the golden monkeys, you will begin your trek into the forest. If you opt for the golden monkey experience, you will have ample time with researchers; if you choose golden monkey trekking, you will spend one hour with the monkeys. Afterward, return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 4

Drive Back to Kampala/Entebbe International Airport

After breakfast, you will embark on the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport, arriving in time for your late departure flight, thus concluding your 4-Day Mgahinga Gorilla and Golden Monkey Experience Safari.

Can I reschedule or cancel this trip?

Rescheduling: You can reschedule this trip as a private tour to any date within 12 months at no additional cost.
Booking Deposit: A 30% deposit of the total tour price is required to secure your booking. The remaining balance is due 45 days before the tour departure date. Bookings not secured with the appropriate deposit will be released.
Cancellation Policy:
- Cancel between 90 and 45 days before departure: 20% penalty of the tour price.
- Cancel within 45 days of departure or no show: 100% penalty of the tour price.

Availability and Accommodations

Reservations: Accommodation and activity availability is not guaranteed until reservations are confirmed with the final itinerary and deposit payment. If any quoted accommodations are unavailable, we reserve the right to substitute them with suitable alternatives, which may affect the final quoted price.

Insurance

Requirement: All clients must have medical and travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances.

Rates

Subject to Change: Tour rates are subject to change without notice. We will make every effort to maintain rates, but changes in government taxes or operating conditions may be passed on to clients.

Permit Cancellation Policy

Uganda Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy

Guarantee: A Gorilla Permit is guaranteed only upon receipt of the deposit ($800 per person per trek) as it must be paid immediately to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Cancellation Fees

More than 90 days before tracking: 25% cancellation fee.
89 to 46 days before tracking: 50% cancellation fee.
45 to 9 days before tracking: 75% cancellation fee.
8 to 0 days before tracking: 100% cancellation fee.

Important Information

Age Requirement: The minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years.
Health: Visitors with flu or other airborne diseases will not be allowed into the rainforest jungle to see the gorillas.
Safety Protocols: Masks must be worn at all times, and a distance of 10 meters must be maintained between you and the gorillas.
