3 Day Lake Mburo Wildlife, Boat and Walking Safari

Overview

Our 3 day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat, and walking safari is perfect for travelers staying in Mbarara or Kampala who wish to explore one of Uganda’s smallest yet closest national parks. Lake Mburo National Park has been revitalized after experiencing severe wildlife-human conflicts in the 1970s and 80s, which led to the extinction of key species like lions. Thanks to the efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the park is being restored to its former glory, with animals such as lions and giraffes reintroduced.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Pickup from the hotel to Begin Your 3 Day Lake Mburo Wildlife, Boat and Walking Safari

Your guide will pick you up, provide a briefing on the safari, and then drive you to Lake Mburo National Park. Along the way, you’ll pass through small towns on the Kampala-Mbarara road, stopping at the Equator for photos and to witness experiments that demonstrate this unique geographical location. You’ll also visit the Mpambire royal drum makers to see how local drums are crafted from wood and animal hides.

Upon arrival at the park, you’ll check in at your lodge, enjoy lunch, and relax before embarking on a brief late-afternoon game drive.

  • Meals: All meals included
Day 2

Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Excursion

After breakfast, your guide will take you on a morning game drive through Lake Mburo National Park. The park, which has overcome a troubled past of wildlife-human conflict, now boasts a thriving population of animals, including reintroduced species like lions (though they are rarely seen) and giraffes. During the game drive, you’ll encounter herds of buffaloes, zebras, impalas, and a variety of bird species, all within a relatively short distance.

After lunch and some relaxation at the lodge, you’ll head to the lake for an afternoon boat cruise. This two-hour excursion offers the chance to see hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds such as the African fish eagle and the rare African finfoot. The lake’s shores also attract buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife. Following the boat cruise, you’ll return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Meals: All meals included
Day 3

Morning Safari Walk and Departure

Following breakfast, a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide will brief you before leading you on a safari walk. This activity is ideal for those who wish to stretch their legs and experience wildlife up close on foot. Lake Mburo is currently the only park in Uganda where you can enjoy a safari on foot. You’ll have the opportunity to see the same wildlife you would during a game drive, but this time, you’ll be on foot. After the walk, you’ll check out of the lodge and drive back to Kampala, with lunch served en route.
