The minimum age for golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga National Park is 12 years. Passports are checked at the park headquarters, so please ensure that all participants are at least 12 years old. There is no maximum age limit as long as the individual is physically able to complete the trek.
For families with younger children under 12, you’re welcome to bring them along to the park. While adults enjoy the trek, we can arrange engaging activities for children, such as guided nature walks, games, or community visits around the lodge, so they’ll have an enjoyable experience as well.
Golden monkeys are a rare and endangered species found primarily in the Virunga volcanic region, spanning East and Central Africa. In Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only place where you can see these unique primates. Listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List, golden monkeys prefer the bamboo forests and mountainous areas in Mgahinga, where they feed on fruits, bamboo shoots, and other vegetation. They are social creatures, often found in large groups or “communities” of up to 100 members, and share their habitat with mountain gorillas, buffalo, forest elephants, and a variety of other wildlife.
Located in southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the renowned Virunga mountain range that extends into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This scenic park is known for its mountain gorilla safaris, as well as the rare opportunity to trek for golden monkeys. Although it’s Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga offers an incredible mix of tropical rainforests, bamboo zones, and volcanic peaks. The park is home to three major volcanoes—Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura—which form part of the Virunga Conservation Area and are popular trekking spots for visitors.
Golden monkey permits in Uganda are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which manages Mgahinga National Park. The permit fees are as follows:
These permits allow you to spend one hour observing the golden monkeys once they are located. Each traveler must have a permit from UWA to participate in the trek.
To book your permit, simply share your intended travel dates with us, and we’ll check availability and arrange your permits. After payment, we’ll secure the permit and have it ready for you at the park headquarters on your trek date.
