Uganda is home to some of the world’s most captivating wildlife, and its lush landscapes provide the ideal backdrop for both a wildlife safari and a round of golf. Combine Uganda’s famous gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a golf session at one of the top golf courses. With Trek Africa Expeditions, we take care of all the details, so you can focus on enjoying your once-in-a-lifetime journey.
The ideal time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season, from December to February and June to early September. These months offer clear skies and easier access to the parks, as vegetation is less dense. However, some prefer the rainy season (March to May and October to November), as the gorillas stay closer to their habitats, and trekking can be slightly easier. Despite the weather, gorilla trekking is available year-round, so you’ll have a great chance of spotting these magnificent creatures.
Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two spectacular national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You can easily reach these parks by flying into Entebbe International Airport, followed by a road trip of about 9-10 hours or a short flight to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips. Alternatively, you can fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, and access the parks via the Cyanika or Katuna border—just a 4-5 hour journey from the border.
The first step in booking your Uganda gorilla safari is securing a gorilla permit. The permit costs USD 700 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 600 for East African residents, and USD 70 for East African citizens. Once you confirm your travel dates, we will check availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and help secure your permit. We recommend booking your permit 3-5 months in advance, as there are only 288 permits available per day in Bwindi, and they can sell out quickly.
The total cost of your gorilla trekking safari will depend on your preferred travel style—whether it’s budget, mid-range, or luxury. The most significant cost is the gorilla permit, but other expenses include accommodation (ranging from USD 100 for budget options to USD 700 for luxury options) and transport. A typical 3-day budget-friendly gorilla trekking safari costs about USD 1600 for a solo traveler, and USD 1150 per person for a group of four, all-inclusive of transport, accommodation, and the gorilla permit. Additional costs may include tips, visas, flights, and alcoholic drinks.
Accommodations around Bwindi are varied, with options in both the northern and southern parts of the park. In the southern part (Rushaga and Nkuringo), you can stay at Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, or Lake Mutanda Resort. The northern part (Buhoma and Ruhija) offers options like Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Lodge, and Trekkers Tavern Cottages. Each of these is close to the start points for gorilla trekking, ensuring you’re well-positioned for an easy and timely departure.
