Planning a safari with your kids? Uganda offers an unforgettable experience for families traveling with children, including the opportunity to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. While the Uganda Wildlife Authority policy restricts gorilla trekking to children 15 and older, there are still plenty of exciting activities for families with younger children.
Gorilla Trekking with Kids: What You Need to Know
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is currently 15 years. This is due to safety concerns, as young children might not handle the trek’s rugged terrain, and their noise could disturb the gorillas. Additionally, children are more susceptible to communicable diseases, which could potentially be transmitted to the gorillas.
While kids under 15 can’t trek, you can still enjoy the safari as a family. We arrange flexible itineraries so one parent can stay behind with the child during the gorilla trek, while the other enjoys the trek. For the rest of your safari, your little ones can join you on game drives, nature walks, and community visits.
How to Safely Travel with Kids on a Uganda Safari
- What’s Required for Gorilla Trekking with Children: While your child can’t trek gorillas, they can still join the safari experience. If you plan to travel with kids, you’ll need to make sure you book a gorilla permit in advance for the adult participants. Children under 15 are not allowed on the gorilla treks, but they can stay with the guide or at the hotel while you go on your trek.
- Waiver for Children: If you’re considering other activities, such as gorilla viewing from a distance, you may need to sign a waiver. This ensures that the tour operator and Uganda Wildlife Authority are not liable for any risks associated with the activities.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: An Overview
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is one of only two places in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Bwindi is divided into four sectors: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a different trekking experience, with different habituated gorilla families to track. Treks are limited to 8 people per family per day, so booking in advance is crucial.
Booking a Gorilla Trek with Kids
If you plan to trek, securing your gorilla permit is a must. While kids under 15 cannot participate in the trekking, they can still enjoy the safari by joining you for activities like nature walks, community visits, and game drives.
