Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins early, with a briefing at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM. The briefing covers safety guidelines, the do’s and don’ts in the forest, and how to interact with the gorillas. Afterward, trained park rangers and trackers guide you through the dense forest in search of the gorilla family assigned to your group.

Once the gorillas are located, you’ll have one hour to observe them in their natural environment, watching their fascinating behaviors and interactions. Afterward, you’ll return to the starting point and receive a certificate of your successful trek.

To preserve the safety of both trekkers and gorillas, Uganda Wildlife Authority allows only eight visitors per family per day. Visitors must be 15 years or older to participate in trekking, as younger individuals may have difficulty following guidelines and could unintentionally transmit diseases to the gorillas.

However, the best time to visit for gorilla trekking is during the drier months, typically from January to February and June to early September. These months see less rainfall, making the trails more accessible and the weather more favorable for trekking. That said, the climate can change daily, so be prepared for any conditions.

Interestingly, the rainy season also offers advantages for spotting gorillas. The lush, green forest provides abundant food for the gorillas, making them easier to find and observe. However, keep in mind that gorilla permits can sell out quickly, especially during the high season, so it’s advisable to book in advance.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is accessible by both road and air.

• By Road: If you’re traveling by road, expect a scenic drive of about 9-10 hours from Kampala or Entebbe. The journey offers beautiful stopovers, including a chance to take photos at the Equator and enjoy a meal in Mbarara. We provide comfortable 4×4 vehicles with professional driver-guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
• By Air: You can also take a flight to either Kisoro or Kihihi Airstrips, located near the park. The flight takes around 1-2 hours from Entebbe, followed by a short drive to your lodge. We offer both scheduled flights and chartered flights, depending on your preferences and budget.
• Via Rwanda: Alternatively, you can fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and drive to Bwindi via the Cyanika or Katuna border. This route takes about 4-5 hours, including immigration at the border. We recommend the East African Visa, which grants multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for just USD 100. This is a more cost-effective option than buying separate visas. Single entry visas are also available: Rwanda Visa (USD 30) and Uganda Visa (USD 50).
