8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route
February 4, 2025Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route
If you’re looking for an exciting and scenic way to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro, the Machame Route is one of the best options, especially for those with only six days to complete the trek. This route offers excellent acclimatization by exposing climbers to higher altitudes early on, helping the body adjust to the altitude changes. However, it is also a challenging climb, requiring good physical fitness to handle the steep elevation gains and long trekking days.
The six-day Machame trek is demanding, particularly on days four and five, when trekkers face a tough schedule. Day four involves a full-day hike from Barranco to Barafu, followed by a short rest before tackling the strenuous summit climb starting around midnight. This means hikers will need to endure 19-24 hours of trekking at extreme altitudes with only a few hours of sleep. Proper preparation, including physical training and mental resilience, is crucial for successfully reaching the summit.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, an Excursia Adventures driver will meet you and transfer you to a hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay. Here, you will receive a detailed briefing about your trek along the Machame Route.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Elevation: 5,400ft to 9,400ft
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, taking about 50 minutes. From the gate, you will trek through a lush rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. You will camp overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation: 9,400ft to 12,500ft
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, you will ascend through a beautiful landscape of heather and volcanic rock, crossing a small valley and steep ridges before reaching Shira Camp for the night.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 12,500ft to 13,000ft
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
- Habitat: Semi-Desert
This is a crucial acclimatization day. The route ascends toward Lava Tower (15,190ft) before descending to Barranco Camp. Although the day starts and ends at a similar elevation, the altitude exposure helps your body adjust to the conditions needed for a successful summit.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 13,000ft to 15,000ft
- Distance: 9 km
- Hiking Time: 8-10 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
A challenging day begins with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through rocky terrain to Karanga Valley. After a short rest, you will continue to Barafu Camp, where you will prepare for the final ascent to the summit.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
- Elevation: 15,300ft to 19,345ft (Uhuru Peak) and down to 10,000ft
- Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
- Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
- Habitat: Arctic
Summit day starts just after midnight, with a strenuous trek through scree slopes to Stella Point (18,600ft). From there, you will hike for about an hour to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the breathtaking sunrise, you will descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and continue down to Mweka Hut for the night.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Moshi
- Elevation: 10,000ft to 5,400ft
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

The final descent takes you to the Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. Afterward, a vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest at the hotel.
