Trekking a Gorilla Group with Many Gorillas in Uganda
February 8, 2025Gorilla Families in Virunga National Park, DR Congo
Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to 10 habituated mountain gorilla families, offering an incredible opportunity for gorilla trekking. Due to ongoing instability in the region, the exact number of gorillas is uncertain, but the last census estimated over 100 individuals, including seven newborns. Let’s explore these remarkable gorilla families and what makes each one unique.
1. Baraka Family
Named in honor of Rachel Masika Baraka, a courageous ranger who lost her life protecting the park, this group is led by the silverback Baraka. Known for fathering many silverbacks in Virunga, this family symbolizes resilience and conservation efforts in the region.
2. Rugendo Family
One of the first habituated groups in Virunga (1985), Rugendo was originally led by the silverback of the same name, who was tragically killed in 2001. His son Senkwekwe took over but was also killed in 2007. The leadership eventually passed to Bukima, who now leads the group of nine individuals, including three silverbacks. This family is often spotted in the Mikeno sector between Bukima and Bikenge.
3. Munyaga Family
Located in the Bukima area, this group was founded by the lone silverback Munyaga in 1998 after he took over a group without a dominant leader. After facing challenges, including losing members to another group, Munyaga disappeared for two years, and leadership shifted to Mawazo. The group now consists of nine members and welcomes visitors for gorilla trekking.
4. Mapuwa Family
Based in the Jomba area, this family was established in 1998 by Mapuwa, a son of Rugendo. Mapuwa left his natal group in 1995 and later formed his own by acquiring two females. Today, the group has 22 members, including three silverbacks, and is a popular choice for trekkers in the park.
5. Lulengo Family
Previously known as the Rugabo family, this group was first habituated in 1985. After the original leader Rugabo was killed in 1994, his son Lulengo took over. The group, now consisting of nine members, has undergone several interactions and transfers with other gorilla families.
6. Kabirizi Family
This is one of the largest groups in the park, with 34 members, led by the dominant silverback Kabirizi. The group was originally named after Ndungutse, a former leader who was killed during a conflict. The family is found near the Goma area and is a favorite for trekkers.
7. Bageni Family
Formed in 2013, Bageni split from his father’s group, Kabirizi, taking 20 individuals with him. The group now consists of 26 members and is known for its calm nature, making it a preferred option for visitors in the Bukima and Gatovu areas.
8. Nyakamwe Family
Established in 2014, this group was formed when Nyakamwe separated from his brother Humba after internal conflicts. With 11 members, including two silverbacks, this family offers a fascinating trekking experience in the Bukima area.
9. Humba Family
Humba, the dominant silverback, leads this 16-member family in the Bukima area near Goma. Known for being one of the calmest groups, it is highly recommended for first-time gorilla trekkers.
