Affordable Gorilla Habituation Safaris

Affordable Gorilla Habituation Safaris

Looking for an unforgettable wildlife experience? Affordable Gorilla Habituation Safaris offer you the unique chance to spend more time with the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. But what makes the Gorilla Habituation Experience stand out compared to regular Gorilla Trekking?

Unlike standard treks, the Gorilla Habituation Experience lets you spend up to 4 hours with the mountain gorillas, observing their behavior in a more intimate and immersive way. This rare experience is available only in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and is not offered in any other park in the world. Bwindi is one of the last remaining habitats for the Mountain Gorillas, which are found in just four parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the DR Congo.

Why Choose Gorilla Habituation Over Gorilla Trekking?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique opportunity to spend extended time with semi-habituated mountain gorillas. You’ll join researchers and park rangers on a guided trek deep into Bwindi’s dense forest, searching for gorillas that are still getting used to human presence. Once you find them, you’ll participate in activities that help these gorillas become accustomed to humans, making them ready for regular gorilla trekking in the future.

Best Time for Gorilla Habituation Safaris in Uganda

While Gorilla Habituation can be done year-round, the best time to visit is during the drier months (January, February and June to early September). These months offer easier access to the park and better visibility as vegetation is less dense. However, some travelers prefer the rainy season for its abundance of food, which causes gorillas to move shorter distances, making them easier to track.

Where to Stay for Your Gorilla Habituation Safari

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, specifically in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors.

Accommodation options near the start points of the experience include:

• Rushaga: Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Four Gorillas Lodge, Gorilla Safari Lodge, Gorilla Valley Lodge and more.
• Nkuringo: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Lake Mutanda Resort.

These lodges provide comfortable accommodations, all within close proximity to the trekking start points.

Cost of Gorilla Habituation Experience Tours

The cost of an affordable Gorilla Habituation Safari depends on the style of travel, itinerary and accommodation preferences. The biggest cost is the Gorilla Habituation Permit (USD 1500 per person). Other expenses include accommodation, transport and services such as guides.

For example, a 3-Day Gorilla Habituation Budget Safari costs:

• Solo traveler: USD 3000
• 2 people sharing: USD 2490 per person
• 3 people sharing: USD 2470 per person
• 4 people sharing: USD 2450 per person

This price is all-inclusive, covering the Gorilla Habituation permit, budget accommodation, transport in a 4×4 safari van, an English-speaking guide and drinking water. It does not include tips, Uganda visa, flights or alcoholic beverages.

How to Book Your Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

Booking an affordable Gorilla Habituation Safari begins with securing a Gorilla Habituation Permit, which costs USD 1500 per person per trek. This permit is available exclusively through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Simply contact us and we’ll guide you through the process.

Once we know your travel dates, we’ll check availability and tentatively reserve your spot. After confirming availability, we’ll send you an invoice for the payment. Once we receive proof of payment, we’ll secure your permit and send you a scanned copy for your records.

Please note, only 8 permits are available each day, as there are just two semi-habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi available for this experience. Therefore, we highly recommend booking at least 3 to 5 months in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on this rare opportunity.

Getting to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

To reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you can fly into Entebbe International Airport and drive south through towns like Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale (approximately 9-10 hours). Alternatively, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip for easier access to the southern part of the park.

You can also fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and drive to Bwindi (about 4-5 hours), which offers a quicker and more scenic route.

We recommend obtaining an East African Visa (USD 100), which covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, allowing multiple entries. Single-entry visas are also available: Uganda (USD 50) and Rwanda (USD 30).
