Akagera National Park, Rwanda: A Wildlife Safari Destination

If you’re planning a wildlife safari in Rwanda, Akagera National Park should be at the top of your list. Located in the eastern part of the country, Akagera is the only park in Rwanda where you can experience thrilling wildlife viewing. This serene and scenic wilderness offers an incredible chance to spot the Big Five in their natural habitat, making it a must-visit destination for safari lovers.

While buffaloes and elephants are commonly seen, you can also spot leopards during night game drives, which are becoming more frequent. The lion and black rhino populations are steadily growing, thanks to successful conservation efforts. Other animals to spot include Maasai giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, warthogs, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, hippos, impalas and waterbucks. Additionally, the park is home to several species of antelope, including eland, topi and roan antelope. Night drives also reveal more elusive species, such as spotted hyenas, genets and bush babies.

Established in 1934, Akagera National Park is a stunning mix of savannah, montane and swamp habitats. It’s named after the Kagera River, which flows along the park’s eastern boundary, feeding into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes. With over a third of the park made up of wetlands, including papyrus swamps, Akagera is home to over 480 bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers.
