Are There Chimpanzees in Congo?

Are There Chimpanzees in Congo?

If you’re wondering whether you can spot chimpanzees during your trip to Congo, the answer is yes! Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is not only famous for being home to endangered mountain gorillas but also for its thriving population of chimpanzees. The park’s lush, eastern tropical forests provide the perfect habitat for these incredible primates, including the Eastern chimpanzee, which is also found along the Ubangi River in the Central African Republic of Congo.

Chimpanzees in Virunga typically live in social groups that range from 20 to 80 members. These intelligent and social animals are relatively easy to trek because of their social nature, which makes them more approachable than other primates like gorillas. However, trekking to see them is a special experience—only four people are allowed to visit a chimpanzee group per day, ensuring an intimate and exclusive encounter with these fascinating creatures.

To trek chimpanzees in Virunga National Park, you’ll need to secure a chimpanzee permit and gain accreditation from the local government and park authorities. Trek Africa Gorillas is happy to assist you in obtaining all the necessary permits and permissions to ensure a smooth trek.

Is It Safe to Trek Chimpanzees in Virunga National Park?

Yes, it is generally safe to trek chimpanzees in Virunga National Park. Over the years, parts of DR Congo have faced challenges, including civil unrest and the Ebola outbreak, which have deterred some travelers. However, the country has been steadily recovering and Virunga is one of the safest areas for wildlife safaris. Trek Africa Gorillas closely monitors the security situation and will provide you with the latest updates and safety information before you embark on your trip.

How to Get to Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park is located in the eastern part of DR Congo and there are a few ways to reach the park. The most common route is to fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and then take a short drive to Gisenyi. From there, you can cross the Rwanda-Congo border into Goma, DR Congo and drive for about 2 hours to reach the park headquarters. Alternatively, you can fly into Kinshasa and then drive to the park but the route via Kigali is more common and efficient. Keep in mind that you will need to clear your equipment upon entry into the country, as safety and security are top priorities.

Best Time to Visit for Chimpanzee Trekking

While chimpanzee trekking in Virunga National Park is available year-round, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which occurs in December, January, February, June, July, August and September. DR Congo’s tropical climate means the weather can be unpredictable, with rain showers possible at any time, even during the dry season. However, trekking during the dry months increases your chances of enjoying clearer paths and more comfortable conditions.

Other Things to Do in Virunga National Park

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

One of the top activities in Virunga National Park is mountain gorilla trekking. While Virunga boasts a vast habitat, the number of gorillas is limited, with only six groups open to trekking. These groups include Kabirizi, Humba, Rugendo, Mapuwa, Lulengo, Munyaga, Nyakamwe and Bageni. Of these, Kabirizi is the most popular due to its large size, with over 30 gorillas. If you wish to trek with the Kabirizi group, be sure to book your permit at least 3 months in advance, as spaces fill up quickly.

Nature Walks through Virunga Forest

Virunga National Park is home to one of the oldest tropical rainforests in Africa, with dense vegetation and stunning biodiversity. During a nature walk through the forest, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique Virunga landscape, discover different tree species, spot various bird species and, with some luck, catch a glimpse of mammals or reptiles. It’s a perfect way to explore the park’s natural beauty while on your DR Congo mountain gorilla safari from Kigali.

Nyiragongo Volcano Hike

For a truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure, consider hiking the Nyiragongo Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Standing at 3,470 meters (11,380 feet), this volcano has erupted 34 times since 1882, with the most recent eruption occurring in 2002. The trek offers not only the thrill of reaching the summit but also a breathtaking view of its lava lake, making it a must-do for adventure seekers visiting Virunga National Park.

Bird Watching in Virunga

Virunga Forest, known for its diverse habitats, is a haven for bird lovers. With its mix of forests, swamps and grasslands, it’s home to over 706 recorded bird species. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a casual enthusiast, a birding expedition in the park should be on your to-do list. From vibrant forest species to elusive swamp dwellers, there’s a wealth of avian life to discover during your DR Congo mountain gorilla safari from Kigali.

Lowland Gorilla Trekking

For those looking for another unique gorilla experience, lowland gorilla trekking is available in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This park is home to just two families of lowland gorillas, making permits highly competitive, especially during peak months (June, July, August, September, December and February). Due to limited availability, it’s recommended to book your permits 3-4 months in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on this incredible experience.
