Are There Chimpanzees in Tanzania? Discover the Best Places to See Them

Yes, Tanzania is home to chimpanzees! In fact, Tanzania is one of the few African countries with national parks specifically dedicated to protecting and studying these fascinating primates. Visitors have the unique opportunity to track both habituated and wild chimpanzees for an up-close and personal experience. Here are the two best destinations to see chimpanzees in Tanzania:

Top Destinations to See Chimpanzees in Tanzania

1. Gombe National Park: Jane Goodall’s Research Haven

Gombe National Park is one of the most iconic places to see chimpanzees in Tanzania. It is famous for its connection to Jane Goodall, who began her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees here in the 1960s. The park is home to habituated chimpanzee groups that you can track with the guidance of experienced rangers along the main Gombe tracking trail.

In addition to chimpanzees, Gombe National Park is teeming with other wildlife, including olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys, diademed monkeys, leopards and bushbucks. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy spotting species like the African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture and Forbes’ plover.

2. Mahale Mountains National Park: Exceptional Chimpanzee Tracking

Mahale Mountains National Park offers one of the most rewarding chimpanzee tracking experiences in Tanzania. The park boasts a larger population of chimpanzees than Gombe and offers more frequent, prolonged sightings.

The park’s diverse habitats range from miombo woodlands to montane rainforests, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna. Visiting Mahale provides not only incredible primate encounters but also breathtaking scenery along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Best Time to See Chimpanzees in Tanzania

The best time to visit depends on your preferences:

• Rainy Season (November to mid-May): Ideal for chimpanzee spotting, as food is abundant and the chimps are less mobile, making them easier to find. The lush green vegetation also creates stunning backdrops for scenic photography.
• Dry Season (May to October): Perfect for photography and hiking. The drier trails make it easier to explore the parks and enjoy longer treks.
