Best Gorilla Trekking Trips in Africa

Searching for the best trips to meet gorillas or wondering about the costs involved? This guide will provide you with everything you need to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, helping you plan and book your adventure seamlessly.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most breathtaking and memorable wildlife experiences you can have. Despite the high cost and the effort it takes—from booking permits to hiking through dense forests—watching endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an experience that’s truly worth it.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through forests to find and spend time with mountain gorillas in their natural environment. It’s a physically demanding activity as you navigate challenging terrain, thick vegetation and sometimes muddy trails. The reward? Spending one magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo.

If you’re looking for an even more immersive experience, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you get up to four hours with semi-habituated gorillas, accompanied by researchers and trackers.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking takes place in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These countries are home to four national parks that protect the world’s remaining mountain gorillas:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
• Virunga National Park in DR Congo.

Additionally, DR Congo offers the chance to see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

To participate in gorilla trekking, you’ll need a gorilla permit, which allows you to join a trekking group and spend time with the gorillas. Since permits are limited and highly sought after, especially during the peak season (June to September), it’s best to book at least 5 months in advance.

What is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Africa is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on your fitness level. For elderly travelers or those with limited mobility, gorilla trekking is still possible, especially in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

To ensure accessibility, sedan chairs are available for hire. These chairs allow porters to carry individuals who may not feel fit enough to hike through the forest. The cost of hiring a sedan chair ranges between $400 and $500 and can be arranged in advance or on the day of your trek.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Penalties and Policy

To participate in gorilla trekking, you must have a valid gorilla permit, which is non-refundable if you cancel between 0 and 8 days before your trek. This cancellation policy applies to Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, so it’s essential to plan accordingly and ensure you’re available for your booked trekking date.

What is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is available year-round but the best time to go is during the dry seasons of January, February, June to early September. During these months, the trails are easier to navigate and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.
