Best Places for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Are you planning a trip to Africa to see the magnificent mountain gorillas? Gorilla trekking is one of the most unique wildlife experiences and it can only be done in a few locations on the continent. The remaining mountain gorillas are found in only four national parks, making them a rare and sought-after experience. These parks are located in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

Top National Parks for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

1. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It offers an exceptional trekking experience with 20 habituated gorilla groups. It’s also the only park in the world where you can partake in the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows you to spend more time with the gorillas.
2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda
Located in southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga is part of the Virunga Massif and offers a more intimate trekking experience with fewer crowds. It’s home to one habituated gorilla family, making it ideal for those seeking a more private encounter.
3. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is another top destination for gorilla trekking. Known for its stunning volcanic scenery, it is home to 12 gorilla families. Although the permit costs are higher in Rwanda, the park’s accessibility and breathtaking landscapes make it a favorite among trekkers.
4. Virunga National Park, DR Congo
Virunga is the oldest national park in Africa and offers trekkers the chance to see both mountain gorillas and, in Kahuzi Beiga National Park, the lowland gorillas. This area is less visited, making it a great option for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Gorilla Permit Costs by Country

Each of these parks requires a gorilla permit for you to trek. The cost of the permit varies depending on the country and park:

• Uganda:
The permit for gorilla trekking costs $800 per person in Bwindi or Mgahinga for foreign non-residents, with discounts for East African residents and citizens. The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi costs $1500 per person, allowing you to spend 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas.
• Rwanda:
In Rwanda, a permit costs $1500 per person for foreign non-residents. Rwanda offers one of the best trekking experiences, with 12 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park.
• DR Congo:
The price of a permit in Virunga is $400 per person during the high season (mid-December to mid-March and June to October) and $200 per person during the low season. In Kahuzi Beiga, permits cost $400 for foreign non-residents.

It’s essential to book your permit well in advance, especially during peak season (June to September), as these permits sell out quickly.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round but the best time to go is during the drier months of January, February and June to September. These months provide better conditions for hiking and clearer views of the gorillas, as the vegetation is less dense.

Packing List: What to Bring for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, so you’ll need to pack appropriately for the conditions. Here’s what to bring:

• Comfortable, sturdy hiking boots
• Lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and trousers
• Insect repellent
• Camera (with extra batteries)
• Water bottle
• Gardening gloves (for handling thick vegetation)
• Rain jacket and sweater (weather can change unexpectedly)
• Hat and sunscreen
• Torch/flashlight and spare batteries

Travel Tips: How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

• By Road: From Entebbe or Kampala, the drive to Bwindi takes about 8-9 hours. The route passes through towns like Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale.
• By Air: You can fly directly to Kisoro Airstrip, which is closest to the southern sector of Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo). From the airstrip, you’ll need a transfer to your lodge.
