Best Places to See Chimpanzees in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the leading destinations in Africa for chimpanzee trekking, offering incredible opportunities to see both habituated and wild chimpanzees in their natural habitats. As one of the first countries in Africa to create a national park specifically for chimpanzee conservation, Tanzania provides unforgettable experiences for primate enthusiasts. Below are the two best places to encounter chimpanzees in Tanzania:

Top National Parks for Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania

1. Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to see chimpanzees in Tanzania. This iconic park is home to habituated groups of chimpanzees, which can be tracked with the help of experienced ranger guides along the Gombe Main Trail.

Gombe is also famous for its connection to Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking research on primates, which began here in the 1960s. Her work not only highlighted the behavior of chimpanzees but also put Gombe on the map as a center for conservation and wildlife study.

While chimpanzees are the main attraction, Gombe National Park also hosts other wildlife, including olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys, diademed monkeys and occasional sightings of leopards, bushbucks and buffaloes. Bird enthusiasts can look out for species like the African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture and barbet.

2. Mahale Mountains National Park

For a truly immersive experience, Mahale Mountains National Park is another fantastic location to track chimpanzees. This park is home to one of the largest chimpanzee populations in Tanzania, with sightings that are more frequent, longer and closer than in Gombe.

Mahale offers a variety of habitats, ranging from miombo woodlands to lowland forests and montane rainforests, making it a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Beyond chimpanzees, visitors can enjoy stunning landscapes and breathtaking views of Lake Tanganyika.

Best Time to Go Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania

Chimpanzee tracking in Tanzania is rewarding throughout the year but the experience can vary depending on the season:

• Rainy Season (November to mid-May): This is the best time for spotting chimpanzees as food is plentiful and they tend to stay closer to the trails. The lush green vegetation also creates a stunning backdrop.
• Dry Season (May to October): This period is ideal for photography and hiking. While chimpanzees may roam further in search of food, the dry trails make trekking easier.
