Best Places to See Hippos in Kenya

Kenya is one of the best destinations in Africa to witness hippos in their natural habitat. These incredible creatures are a favorite among safari-goers and there are several spots in Kenya where you can catch a glimpse of them. Here are some of the best places to see hippos in Kenya:

Top Wildlife Destinations for Hippo Sightings in Kenya

Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Maasai Mara is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in the world. With its vast savannahs and numerous rivers, it provides ample opportunities to see hippos. The Mara River and various hippo pools in the reserve are home to large groups of hippos, making it a prime spot for safari enthusiasts to observe them in the wild.

Hippo Pool at Nairobi National Park

Located just 7 kilometers from Nairobi, Nairobi National Park is unique in that it offers visitors the chance to see wild animals, including hippos, so close to a major city. The Hippo Pool is the main concentration of hippos in the park, providing an excellent chance to see these fascinating creatures up close while enjoying the skyline of Nairobi in the distance.

Amboseli National Park

Surrounded by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park is not only known for its large elephant herds but also for its hippo populations. Spotting hippos in Amboseli’s swampy areas against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro is a rare and beautiful sight, perfect for capturing stunning photos.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Famous for its stunning alkaline Lake Nakuru, this park is a haven for birdwatchers, especially due to the large flocks of pink flamingos. But it’s not just birds you’ll encounter here; hippos also call this park home. Alongside hippos, you can spot cheetahs, lions, leopards, buffaloes and even rhinos, making it a great all-round safari destination.

Best Time to See Hippos in Kenya

You can see hippos in Kenya year-round but the best time for sightings is from December to February and June to October. During these months, the weather is generally drier, making it easier to navigate the trails and capture clear photos. The wet months of March to May and November bring lush vegetation and occasional rains, which can make sightings a bit more challenging.
