Best Places to See Primates in Tanzania

Best Places to See Primates in Tanzania — Tanzania is renowned for its wildlife safaris and while it is famous for the Big Five, it is also an excellent destination for primate enthusiasts. From chimpanzees to various species of monkeys, Tanzania offers some of the best spots to see primates in their natural habitat. While many national parks are dominated by large game animals, there are a few select places where you can track and observe primates up close. Here are the top places to spot primates in Tanzania:

Top Parks for Primate Viewing in Tanzania

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is a top destination for primate viewing in Tanzania. This park is famous for its chimpanzees and is one of the best places in East Africa to see these fascinating creatures. In addition to chimpanzees, Mahale is home to other primates, including red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys. The park’s dense forests and mountainous terrain provide the perfect habitat for these primates. The best time to visit is during the wet season, when the fruit trees are in bloom and tracking primates is easier.

Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park is another prime location for seeing chimpanzees. It’s here that the famous primatologist Jane Goodall conducted her groundbreaking research on chimpanzee behavior. Gombe is home to several habituated chimpanzee groups that can be tracked with the help of experienced guides. Aside from chimpanzees, you can also encounter other wildlife such as olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, diademed monkeys and various species of birds, including the African fish eagle and the palm-nut vulture.

Other Prime Locations to See Primates in Tanzania

In addition to Mahale and Gombe, several other national parks and reserves in Tanzania are worth visiting for primate sightings:

• Selous Game Reserve
• Arusha National Park
• Kilimanjaro National Park
• Katavi National Park
• Mikumi National Park

Each of these locations offers a chance to encounter different species of monkeys and other wildlife, making them ideal for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.

Best Time to Film and See Primates in Tanzania

The best time to film primates in Tanzania depends on the season. The rainy season (from November to mid-May) is ideal for spotting chimpanzees, as the lush, green vegetation provides a stunning backdrop for filming. This period also offers excellent conditions for tracking chimpanzees, as fruit is abundant and makes it easier to find them. However, the dry season (from May to October) is better for photography and short hikes, as the conditions are clearer and more stable, allowing for excellent shots of the primates.

While primates can be filmed year-round, visiting during the rainy season gives you the added benefit of vibrant landscapes and active wildlife.
