Tanzania is one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations for wildlife viewing, offering some of the best safaris on the planet. With its diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife and a welcoming atmosphere, Tanzania is a dream come true for nature lovers. From the iconic Big 5 to the spectacular Great Migration, there’s no shortage of incredible wildlife experiences. Whether you’re a photographer, filmmaker or just a nature enthusiast, Tanzania is a must-visit. Here are the best places to see wildlife in Tanzania:

Top National Parks and Reserves for Wildlife Viewing

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is arguably the most famous wildlife destination in Tanzania and one of the best places in Africa to spot a variety of animals. The park is renowned for its vast savannas, grasslands and woodlands, which are home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including lions, zebras, cheetahs, giraffes, leopards, elephants and wildebeests. The Serengeti is also famous for the Great Migration of wildebeests and zebras, a truly awe-inspiring natural event.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places to see the Big 5: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and the endangered black rhino. This extinct volcanic crater, often called the “Garden of Eden,” is home to an incredible range of species, including wildebeests, hippopotamuses, zebras, giraffes and more. The diverse landscape makes it an exceptional place for wildlife viewing year-round.

Tarangire National Park

Known for its enormous herds of elephants, Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem in Tanzania. It boasts one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa, with herds sometimes numbering up to 300 individuals. The park is also home to lions, cheetahs, giraffes, wildebeests, buffaloes and a variety of other animals. The Tarangire River, which runs through the park, is a lifeline for wildlife during the dry season.

Lake Manyara National Park

Located at the base of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is known for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. The park is home to elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions, as well as a large variety of birds, including the lesser flamingo and yellow-billed stork. It’s also one of the few places where you can see the famous tree-climbing lions. Predators like leopards and hyenas can be spotted, while the park’s alkaline lake attracts a variety of migratory birds.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and least-visited parks, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a more exclusive wildlife experience. The park is home to a high concentration of elephants, along with lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and wild dogs. It is also a great place to spot rare species such as greater kudu and sable antelope.

Other Notable Wildlife Destinations

• Selous Game Reserve – Known for its wild beauty and diversity of wildlife.
• Katavi National Park – A remote and pristine park offering fantastic wildlife sightings.
• Mikumi National Park – A great option for those looking for Big 5 sightings without the crowds.

When is the Best Time to See Wildlife in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers year-round wildlife viewing but the best time to visit is typically from June to October. This is the dry season, when animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. If you’re hoping to catch the Great Migration, the best months are between January and March or July and October, depending on where the herds are. The rainy season (November to May) is also a good time to visit for lush landscapes and fewer tourists.

Essential Tanzania Travel Information: Visas and Permits

Visitors to Tanzania will need a tourist visa. It’s recommended to get your visa in advance but it can also be obtained on arrival at any entry point. The tourist visa costs about USD 100 and is processed quickly. Travelers from certain countries may also need to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination and a COVID-19-free certificate. Be sure to check the latest entry requirements before your trip.
