Best Route for a Self-Drive Trip to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Planning a self-drive adventure through Uganda with a visit to Bwindi for gorilla trekking? You’re in the right place! Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is divided into four main sectors: Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south and Buhoma and Ruhija in the north. Depending on where you’re coming from, the best route to Bwindi can vary.

About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is located in southwestern Uganda and shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s one of only two places in the world where you can trek the magnificent mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Bwindi is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a must-visit destination for gorilla enthusiasts.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect

Bwindi offers four gorilla trekking regions: Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins early in the morning with a briefing from the park rangers about the dos and don’ts of trekking. After the briefing, you’ll be guided through the forest to find the gorillas, with a one-hour viewing once you encounter them. The trek usually starts around 7:00 AM and after the experience, you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your successful gorilla trekking adventure.

Permit Costs for Gorilla Trekking and Habituation

When planning a gorilla trek in Bwindi, securing permits is essential. Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

• Gorilla trekking permits:

  • USD 800 for Non-Foreign Residents
  • USD 700 for Foreign Residents
  • UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens

• Gorilla Habituation permits:

  • USD 1500 for Non-Foreign Residents

Gorilla Habituation permits allow you to spend four hours with the gorillas, offering a more immersive experience as you observe their daily activities.

Best Time of Year for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be done year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from June to October and December to March. During this period, the trails are less muddy and the forest vegetation is thinner, offering better visibility. The wet season, from April to May and November, brings higher vegetation and longer treks but shorter trekking distances since the gorillas don’t need to travel as far for food.

Self-Drive Routes to Bwindi: Which Direction Should You Take?

Route for Travelers Coming from Kampala or Entebbe
