Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe National Park

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe National Park, Tanzania

Gombe National Park offers an incredible chimpanzee trekking experience and the best time to visit largely depends on what you’re looking to get out of your adventure. If you’re after lush, green landscapes and breathtaking scenery, the rainy season (November to mid-May) is ideal. The vegetation flourishes, creating a vibrant backdrop for your trek. However, if you’re more interested in the best photo opportunities and more manageable trekking conditions, the dry season (May to October) is your best bet, with clear skies and excellent visibility.

Why Gombe National Park Is a Top Destination for Chimpanzee Trekking

Gombe National Park is renowned as one of Tanzania’s top destinations for chimpanzee tracking. Home to habituated chimpanzee groups, this park offers a unique opportunity to observe these incredible primates up close, guided by experienced rangers.

The park is famously known for being the site of Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking research on chimpanzees, making it a significant location for primate studies in East Africa. In addition to chimpanzees, Gombe also boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys and even leopards, buffalo and bushbucks. Birdwatchers can also delight in species like the African fish eagle and the palm-nut vulture.

Best Time to See Chimpanzees in Tanzania

Chimpanzee sightings in Tanzania are possible throughout the year but the best time to trek is during the dry months, from June to October and December to February. These months offer more favorable conditions for trekking with better visibility and easier access. Avoid the wet months from March to May and November, as the trails can be slippery and sightings may be more challenging.
