Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is during the dry months of January, February, June, July, August and early September. These months tend to have less rainfall, making the trekking experience more enjoyable. However, keep in mind that Rwanda’s weather can be unpredictable and the climate changes daily. While the dry season is often preferred, the rainy season also offers unique advantages. The rain nourishes the vegetation, providing plenty of food for the gorillas, which can make them easier to spot in the wild.

If you’re planning to trek gorillas during peak season, it’s essential to book your gorilla permits well in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly.

What to Expect When Visiting Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc des Volcans (in French) or Pariki Yigihugu y’ibirunga (in Kinyarwanda), is located in northwestern Rwanda, in the small town of Musanze. The park is one of the oldest and most renowned in Africa, home to the endangered mountain gorillas and other wildlife like golden monkeys, various bird species and forest animals like bushbucks and forest hogs. The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Bisoke.

Each year, more and more visitors come to experience gorilla trekking, which has significantly contributed to Rwanda’s economic growth. With half of the world’s remaining gorilla population in East Africa, visiting Volcanoes National Park offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
