Best Time to Hike Mount Kilimanjaro

Best Time to Hike Mount Kilimanjaro: When and How to Plan Your Trek

The best time to hike Mount Kilimanjaro is during the warmer and drier months of the year, typically from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. These months offer the most favorable weather conditions for trekking, with less rain and milder temperatures. However, these are also the busiest months on the mountain, so it’s important to book your trek well in advance.

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we recommend the 7-day Machame Route for your Kilimanjaro hike. Known as the “Whisky Route,” this route is ideal for acclimatization, offering climbers the chance to “walk high, sleep low” – a technique that maximizes your chances of reaching the summit. The Machame route boasts one of the highest summit success rates among all Kilimanjaro routes.

Why Choose the Machame Route for Kilimanjaro Trekking?

Our 7-Day Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route provides a great acclimatization program with two shorter days of trekking before your summit ascent. You’ll journey through five different climatic zones, experiencing breathtaking views and diverse landscapes along the way.

Overview of Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

Day 1: Machame (45% of Climbers)

The Machame route is the most popular for a reason. It’s challenging but offers stunning views, including lush rainforests, moorlands and dry deserts. Despite being more difficult, it has a higher success rate than easier routes like Marangu because it allows for better acclimatization.

Day 2: Marangu (35% of Climbers)

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the easiest and most straightforward route, with well-defined paths and sleeping huts along the way. It’s also the most affordable route but it’s generally more crowded and less scenic compared to others.

Day 3: Lemosho (8% of Climbers)

If you love the wilderness, Lemosho is for you. The first few days offer incredible rainforest scenery before merging with the Machame route. It’s less crowded and provides a great wilderness experience in the early stages.

Day 4: Rongai (7% of Climbers)

Rongai is a quieter, more scenic route that offers a peaceful alternative to Marangu. It’s slightly more expensive due to its remote location but it provides a good balance of beauty and accessibility.

Day 5: Umbwe (4% of Climbers)

For the more adventurous climber, Umbwe offers a steep and challenging route with fewer trekkers. However, it’s less ideal for acclimatization, resulting in a lower success rate.

Day 6: Shira (Less than 1% of Climbers)

Shira is a more difficult route with a significant altitude gain on the first night. It’s one of the least popular routes, as it’s less acclimatization-friendly, though the views are stunning.

Day 7: Northern Circuit (Low % of Climbers)

The Northern Circuit is the longest and newest route, offering exceptional views and the best acclimatization opportunities. It’s remote and has low traffic, making it ideal for those who want a quieter trek with unparalleled vistas. However, it requires a longer time commitment and is more expensive.
