Gorilla Trekking Tours Starting from Kigali

Gorilla trekking in Africa is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Despite the costs and the physical demands, the chance to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

What to Expect During Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through forests, navigating uneven terrain and crossing rivers or swamps in search of mountain gorillas. The trek can be challenging, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll have one hour to observe and photograph them.

For those wanting more time with the gorillas, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, where you can spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group, guided by researchers and trackers.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

Gorilla trekking is available in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, all home to mountain gorillas.

Popular Gorilla Trekking Destinations:

• Uganda:
  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda:
  • Volcanoes National Park
• DR Congo:
  • Virunga National Park (for mountain gorillas)
  • Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for lowland gorillas)

To trek in any of these parks, you’ll need a gorilla trekking permit, which should be booked as early as possible, especially during the peak season from June to September. For last-minute bookings, Trek Africa Gorillas can help secure your permits and organize your trip.

Gorilla Trekking Costs and Permits in Uganda

Uganda offers some of the most affordable gorilla trekking permits:

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents
• $700 per person for foreign residents
• $80 per person for East African citizens

The permit allows you to spend one hour with a mountain gorilla family in either Bwindi or Mgahinga. For the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, permits cost $1,500, giving you 4 hours with the gorillas.

Uganda is home to 23 habituated gorilla groups, with 16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga, providing 136 permits daily for gorilla trekking.

What Is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on individual fitness levels. If you’re older or have mobility challenges, trekking is still possible in Bwindi Forest with the help of sedan chair carriers, where porters carry you into the forest. These chairs can be hired on the day of the trek or booked in advance for approximately $400–$500.

Why Start Your Gorilla Trekking Tour in Kigali?

Starting your gorilla trekking trip in Kigali offers several benefits:

• Explore Rwanda: Take time to experience Kigali’s vibrant culture and scenic landscapes before your trek.
• Quick Transfers: Cross the Rwanda-Uganda border and reach the park headquarters within 2-3 hours.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy and Penalties in Uganda

If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure, securing a gorilla permit is essential. However, it’s important to understand the cancellation policy in case your plans change. Gorilla permit cancellations in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo share the same basic rules: If you cancel your permit within 8 days of the trekking date, you won’t receive a refund.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda from Kigali

Gorilla trekking in Uganda can be done year-round but the best time to visit is during the drier months, which are typically from January, February and June to early September. During these periods, the forest paths are less muddy and the vegetation is not as thick, making it easier to view the gorillas in their natural habitat. These conditions also make travel to the parks more accessible and enjoyable.
