Booking a Uganda Safari

Booking a Uganda Safari: Your Complete Guide

Booking a safari to Uganda is an exciting prospect but choosing the right tour operator is key to ensuring a seamless, memorable experience. With so much to explore, from wildlife safaris to primate tracking, it’s crucial to partner with a knowledgeable and reliable operator. At Trek Africa Gorillas, we’re here to guide you through every step of planning your Uganda safari, ensuring it suits your budget, interests and available time. Whether you’re after a wildlife adventure, gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking, we offer a variety of packages tailored to your needs.

Why Visit Uganda?

Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Uganda is a landlocked gem rich in natural beauty. Home to the source of the Nile, the vast Lake Victoria and the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda’s landscapes are as diverse as they are stunning. The highlight for many visitors is the chance to see the rare and endangered mountain gorillas, found in only three countries—Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. However, Uganda offers much more. The country is home to the Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffaloes—and boasts a wealth of wildlife, including in its 10 national parks.

Whether you’re visiting Uganda for gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, bird watching or hiking, you’ll find something to thrill and delight you in this beautiful country.

How to Plan and Book Your Uganda Safari

Step 1: Choose a Trusted Tour Operator

The first step to a successful Uganda safari is working with a professional tour operator who is reliable and experienced. To ensure you’re working with a reputable company, look for membership in the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO). This association governs and regulates the operations of tour operators, ensuring that clients are well-protected and that service standards are met. Be wary of operators offering prices that seem too good to be true, such as gorilla trekking permits priced much lower than the market rate (usually around $700 per permit).

Step 2: Read Reviews and Testimonials

Researching reviews from previous clients is an essential step in selecting a tour operator. Platforms like TripAdvisor and Safari Bookings are great for finding honest feedback from past travelers. Choose an operator with positive reviews and a solid reputation for quality service. Avoid trusting reviews that seem overly negative or suspiciously perfect.

Step 3: Select Your Safari Package

Once you’ve found a trusted operator, it’s time to choose a safari package that suits your interests, budget and available time. Uganda offers a variety of options, from thrilling gorilla trekking to wildlife safaris, bird watching and cultural experiences. Gorilla trekking is one of the top attractions in Uganda, with affordable permits compared to neighboring Rwanda, where permits cost $1500 per person.

Other highlights in Uganda include wildlife safaris (where you can spot the Big Five), chimpanzee tracking, hiking the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and exploring Uganda’s unique birdlife. The diverse range of activities ensures there’s something for every type of traveler.

Step 4: Consider Your Time and Budget

The number of days you have available will impact the safari package you choose. Uganda is a relatively small country but its landscapes are varied and expansive, so even a week-long safari won’t cover everything. With that in mind, safari packages can range from short two-day trips to longer, more immersive tours lasting 30 days or more. Whether you’re traveling on a budget or seeking a luxury experience, Uganda has accommodation options to suit all budgets—from budget campsites to high-end lodges.

If you’re looking to combine your Uganda safari with other East African destinations, the country’s central location makes it easy to connect to Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and more. Many visitors use the East African visa, which allows re-entry to all member countries during its validity.

Step 5: Get the Best Value for Your Safari

Uganda offers a range of budget options, from camping and dormitory stays to luxurious lodge accommodations. Whether you’re looking for an affordable trip or something more exclusive, Trek Africa Gorillas offers packages that cater to all types of travelers. Our team is always ready to help customize your safari experience and we pride ourselves on our quick responses to inquiries.

Step 6: Confirming Your Safari Booking

Once you’ve selected the perfect safari package on our website, simply send us an inquiry and our safari consultant will get back to you as quickly as possible. We’ll verify that all services you’ve requested—such as accommodation, transportation (including flights), permits, park entry fees and any optional services—are available for your preferred dates. As experts in Uganda safari planning, we will guide you through the booking process and provide advice to ensure everything is in place for your dream safari experience.

Step 7: Secure Key Safari Elements Early

When booking a safari, certain elements are particularly time-sensitive, such as gorilla permits. These permits are a crucial part of your safari and availability can vary depending on the season. If you’re planning a gorilla safari, we will confirm the availability of permits before finalizing your booking. The same applies to accommodation—booking early ensures you secure the best options.

Uganda has both high and low seasons and during peak travel periods, demand for services is high. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking your safari as early as possible to secure availability during these busy times.

Once we’ve confirmed the availability of all requested services, we’ll proceed with securing your bookings in advance to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

Step 8: Payment Process and Booking Confirmation

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we believe in making the booking process easy and transparent. Unlike many other tour operators, we ask for a deposit to secure your safari, which varies depending on your chosen package. For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, a deposit covering the cost of the permits is required. If your safari package doesn’t include these activities, a 20% deposit will suffice.

After making your payment, please send us proof of payment. Once we’ve received it, we’ll send you a booking manifest form to collect your personal details and other necessary information. The balance for the trip is due at least three weeks before your safari departure date.

Step 9: Prepare for Your Uganda Safari

Before your trip, we’ll send you a detailed travel information document. This will guide you on the essential documents you’ll need for travel to Uganda, as well as any required vaccinations or health precautions to take before you leave.
