• $200 per person for foreign residents

Why Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park is Worth the Money

Many travelers visiting Kibale National Park consider chimpanzee trekking to be one of the most rewarding activities, with reviews calling it unforgettable, magical and life-changing.

The $250 permit fee you pay not only gives you the opportunity to observe the endangered, habituated chimpanzees in Kibale but it also contributes to the conservation of the park and its wildlife. Without tourism activities like chimpanzee trekking, Kibale Forest would be at risk due to encroachment by nearby communities. The revenue from trekking helps protect the chimpanzees’ natural habitat, while also generating much-needed funds for local communities and the government of Uganda.

How Chimpanzee Trekking Supports Local Communities

The money spent on chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is used to fund important projects that directly benefit local communities. Every year, 20% of the revenue from permit sales and park entrance fees is allocated to local community development. This contributes to the construction of schools, hospitals and agricultural initiatives, improving the quality of life for those living near the park. By supporting this activity, you are also supporting the livelihoods of these communities, encouraging them to protect and conserve the chimpanzees and their habitat.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park

The best time for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is from June to October and December to March. During these months, Uganda experiences a dry season with light rainfall, making treks through the forest more comfortable. The vegetation is also less dense, which improves visibility and makes it easier to spot the chimpanzees. These conditions offer perfect opportunities for photography and viewing the chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

From April to May and November, the wet season causes the vegetation to grow thicker, which can make sightings a bit harder. However, the treks tend to be shorter during this time because the chimpanzees don’t travel as far for food—food is more abundant in the forest. Regardless of when you visit, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is a well-organized activity, with a 99% chance of seeing chimpanzees throughout the year.
