Once the chimps are located, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour watching them eat, rest and play. It’s a great experience that’s truly worth the money. Along the way, you may also spot other primates, reptiles, mammals and wildlife such as forest elephants, monkeys and butterflies, making your trek through the forest even more exciting.

How Much Does Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Cost?

The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Kibale varies depending on your travel plans, the duration of your stay and your choice of accommodation. Here’s a breakdown of the chimpanzee habituation experience fees:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $300 per person
• Residents: $250 per person
• East African Citizens: 250,000 Uganda Shillings per person

This permit grants you a full-day encounter with the habituated chimpanzees of Kibale National Park, allowing you to learn more about their behavior and the conservation efforts in place.

In addition to the permit, there are other costs to consider for a successful chimpanzee trekking experience, including transportation, accommodation and guiding services.

Why is the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience Worth the Money?

The chimpanzee habituation experience is one of the most popular activities in Kibale National Park. Many travelers who participate in the habituation process describe it as magical, unforgettable and life-changing.

The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is $250 per person. This fee not only gives you a chance to observe and learn about the endangered chimpanzees but also plays a crucial role in their conservation. The revenue generated through chimpanzee trekking helps protect Kibale’s forest and wildlife habitat. Without this sustainable tourism activity, Kibale’s ecosystem could have been destroyed by encroachment from local communities. The income from trekking permits and park entrance fees supports local communities, creating a partnership between tourism and environmental conservation.

The money spent on chimpanzee trekking directly benefits local communities. They receive 20% of the proceeds from permits and entrance fees, which go toward infrastructure projects such as schools, hospitals and agricultural initiatives. This fosters a sense of ownership and encourages local residents to protect the chimps and their habitat. In this way, the money spent on chimpanzee trekking isn’t just enriching your experience—it’s helping improve the lives of people living around Kibale National Park and promoting the long-term conservation of chimpanzees.

Best Time to Book Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park

The best time to go chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is from June to October and December to March. During these months, Uganda experiences a dry season, with mild rainfall that makes trekking in the forest more comfortable. The vegetation is also less dense, making it easier to spot chimpanzees and take great photographs.

While chimp trekking is possible year-round, the wet season (April, May and November) brings more rainfall, which causes the vegetation to grow thicker, potentially making sightings more challenging. However, the good news is that chimpanzee treks tend to be shorter during these months, as food is more abundant in the forest and the chimps don’t need to travel as far for their meals. Regardless of when you visit, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is very well organized and you have a 99% chance of spotting chimps in their natural habitat any time of the year.
