January 2, 2025Booking Gorilla Habituation Experience Permits: An Immersive Safari in Bwindi
If you’re looking for a more immersive experience with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, booking a Gorilla Habituation Experience permit is the perfect choice for you. This unique safari offers the opportunity to spend four hours with the gorillas, unlike the standard one-hour encounter during regular gorilla trekking. The Gorilla Habituation Experience is an exclusive activity only available in Uganda, as it’s not offered in Rwanda or the DR Congo, making it a must-do for any traveler visiting Uganda.
What Is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique activity where you get to trek through the forest to find semi-habituated gorillas. These gorillas are still in the process of adapting to human presence, making the experience more engaging. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll participate in activities designed to help them become accustomed to humans.
Unlike standard gorilla trekking, which only allows you one hour with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience gives you a four-hour encounter. This extra time allows you to learn more about the gorillas and observe their behavior in greater detail. The experience is conducted in small groups of four people per gorilla family, making it a more personalized and intimate safari.
Where Is the Gorilla Habituation Experience Offered?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is exclusively available in the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, specifically in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. While the park has four sectors for regular gorilla trekking (Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Buhoma), only two sectors are designated for the Gorilla Habituation Experience and only two gorilla families are available for this activity.
Difference Between Gorilla Habituation Experience and Gorilla Tracking
The main difference between Gorilla Habituation Experience and Gorilla Tracking lies in the amount of time spent with the gorillas. During the Gorilla Habituation Experience, you’ll spend four hours with the gorillas, while gorilla tracking offers a one-hour encounter.
Additionally, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is done in smaller groups of 4 people, whereas gorilla tracking typically involves 8 people per group.
In terms of pricing, the Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs:
- USD 1500 for foreign non-residents,
- USD 1000 for foreign residents,

On the other hand, the Gorilla Tracking permit costs:

Best Time for Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi
The best time to embark on the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which run from June to October and December to March. These months offer mild rainfall and manageable weather, making it easier for treks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. During this time, the vegetation is less dense, providing better visibility for tracking the mountain gorillas and offering fantastic opportunities for photography.
While April, May and November are considered the wet season in Uganda, these months can still be ideal for trekking. Although the vegetation is thicker, which may make sightings less clear, the treks tend to be shorter as mountain gorillas stay closer to their families due to abundant food sources. Gorilla Habituation Experience is available year-round and the activity is well-organized, so you have a 99% chance of spotting the gorillas regardless of the season.
