Booking Gorilla Permits for Ruhija Sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — Planning to trek mountain gorillas in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park? With Trek Africa Gorillas, securing your gorilla permits is made simple and stress-free, even during peak seasons like June to September when demand is at its highest. These months often see permits selling out fast due to high numbers of travelers but with our expertise, we ensure you don’t miss out on this incredible adventure.

Why Visit Ruhija Sector for Gorilla Trekking?

Located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Ruhija is home to four habituated gorilla families: Bitukura, Mukiza, Kyaguriro and Oruzogo. Each family is open for tracking, providing a unique opportunity to observe mountain gorillas up close.

Ruhija sits at an elevation of 2,350 meters above sea level, making it the coldest area in Bwindi. In addition to gorilla trekking, the sector offers excellent hiking opportunities, including nature trails like the Rwamunyonyi Peak, ideal for adventurous travelers. Travelers staying in Buhoma can also trek in Ruhija, especially during peak seasons when permits for Buhoma are sold out.

Essential Tips for Planning Your Gorilla Trek in Ruhija

1. Booking Gorilla Permits in Advance

To secure your spot, we recommend booking gorilla permits for Ruhija at least 3–4 months before your planned safari. Permits cost $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. These permits grant you an unforgettable hour-long encounter with mountain gorillas.

2. Accommodation in Ruhija

For a seamless experience, choosing the right accommodation is key. Ruhija offers limited luxury lodging options like Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge and Bakiga Lodge (mid-range with luxury-level service). During peak seasons, travelers seeking luxury may opt to stay in nearby Buhoma lodges such as Gorilla Sanctuary Forest Camp, Bwindi Lodge, Mahogany Springs or Silverback Lodge.

3. Comfortable Travel to Ruhija

To enhance your safari experience, consider traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser for a smooth ride to Ruhija. Alternatively, you can opt for a flight to Kihihi Airstrip, which reduces the usual 8–9-hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala to just 1 hour by road from Kihihi to Ruhija.

Aerolink offers domestic flights to Kihihi and private charters are available for more flexible travel. Note: luggage is limited to 15 kg per passenger and excess is charged at $3 per kilo.

4. What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Packing the right gear ensures a comfortable and enjoyable trek. Here’s what we recommend:

• A long-sleeved sweater for the chilly weather.
• Waterproof hiking boots.
• Two pairs of long trousers.
• A raincoat (Bwindi is a rainforest and rain is unpredictable).
• Gardening gloves for gripping branches and trees.
• A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (optional, depending on the weather).
• A mosquito repellent for insect protection.
• A camera and extra batteries (remember to turn off the flash).
• A pair of binoculars for spotting birds and other wildlife.

Avoid bright colors, as they may scare the gorillas and steer clear of black or blue clothing, which attracts tsetse flies. Neutral colors are highly recommended.
