Budget Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: How to Plan an Affordable Adventure

If you’re planning to visit Africa for a genuine gorilla trekking experience on a budget, our guide to Budget Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda will help you plan and book your trek with ease. Gorilla trekking in Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that draws travelers from around the world. While the activity can be costly, physically demanding and sometimes uncomfortable, the rewards are well worth it. Encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat in Rwanda, Uganda or Congo is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences you can have.

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through thick vegetation, navigating difficult terrain and sometimes crossing rivers and swamps to find the gorillas. The trek can be physically challenging, so it’s essential to be fit. However, once you find the gorillas, you’ll be able to spend an hour observing them in their natural surroundings. For those seeking more time with the gorillas, we recommend the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest, where you can spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa? Top Parks and Countries

Gorilla trekking takes place in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo, all of which are home to the remaining mountain gorillas. The four national parks hosting these magnificent creatures are:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda
• Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
• Virunga National Park in Congo

In addition to the mountain gorillas, Congo offers the opportunity to see Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Beiga National Park.

To trek in any of these parks, you will need a gorilla permit. Given the high demand for gorilla trekking, especially during peak seasons (June to September), it’s best to book your gorilla permits at least 5 months in advance.

Understanding Gorilla Permit Costs in Rwanda

• Foreign Non-Residents: $1500 per person per trek
• Foreign Residents: $500 per person
• East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan): $200 per person

This permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda has 12 gorilla families, with 96 permits available each day for trekking. Gorilla permits can be obtained directly through the Rwanda Development Board or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Who Can Go Gorilla Trekking? Age and Accessibility Guidelines

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years and the maximum age is 85 years, depending on physical fitness. Elderly travelers can still enjoy the experience in Bwindi Forest, where sedan chair carriers are available. These chairs are carried by porters and are designed for those who are unable to walk the challenging terrain. You can hire a sedan chair in advance or on the day of the trek. The cost of hiring a sedan chair typically ranges from $400 to $500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy in Rwanda

Once you book a gorilla permit, it is expected that you will use it on the specified date. If you cancel or fail to show up for your trek, there are no refunds within 0 to 8 days of the trek.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: When to Visit for the Best Experience

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is available year-round but the best time to visit is during the drier months, typically January, February and June to early September. The dry weather makes it easier to travel to the park and provides clearer views of the gorillas as the vegetation is less dense. However, it’s important to note that gorillas can be trekked year-round.

Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda, it’s important to come prepared for the physical and environmental challenges you may face. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, often on muddy, steep terrain and conditions can change quickly, especially if it rains. To ensure you have a comfortable and safe trekking experience, here’s a list of essential items to pack:

• Insect Repellent: The forest can be home to biting insects, so having repellent will keep you comfortable.
• Torch/Flashlight (with spare batteries): It can get dark in the forest, so having a reliable light source is essential.
• Wet Wipes: Handy for cleaning up after the trek or for a quick refresh during breaks.
• Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during the trek; make sure to carry enough water.
• Camera (with extra lenses): Capture the unforgettable moments with the gorillas but remember to turn off the flash to avoid disturbing them.
• Comfortable Hiking Boots & Socks: These are a must for navigating the muddy and uneven paths. Ensure your boots are sturdy and broken in before the trek.
• Gardening Gloves: These will help protect your hands when holding onto trees and branches during the hike.
• Sandals/Flip-flops: For relaxing after your trek.
• Hat & Sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun, especially during the hike.
• Rain Jacket: Rwanda’s forest is in a rainforest region, so rain is common. Be prepared for sudden downpours.
• Sweater/Fleece: Temperatures can get cool in the forest, especially early in the morning or in the evening.
• Swimwear: Some accommodations may have swimming pools, so pack your swimwear if you plan to take a dip after your trek.
• Binoculars: If you enjoy birdwatching or wildlife spotting, binoculars will help you get a closer look at the amazing species in the park.
