Where is Gorilla Trekking Best in Uganda?

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is Uganda’s premier gorilla trekking destination. The park is divided into four sectors:

• Buhoma (Northern Bwindi)
• Ruhija (Northeastern Bwindi)
• Nkuringo (Southern Bwindi)
• Rushaga (Southern Bwindi)

Each sector has several habituated gorilla families available for trekking, with Rushaga being the most popular due to its larger number of gorilla groups. These sectors are located close to other attractions, like Queen Elizabeth National Park (near Buhoma and Ruhija) and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (near Nkuringo and Rushaga), allowing for combined safaris if desired.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga is an unforgettable experience, as both parks are home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi alone houses over half of the world’s remaining 1,064 mountain gorillas, with more than 15 habituated gorilla families open for trekking. Each family allows only 8 trekkers per day, ensuring an exclusive and intimate encounter.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost?

• USD 800 per person for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 per person for East African Residents
• UGX 300,000 per person for East African Citizens

The cost of the gorilla permit gives you the unique opportunity to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas once you find them on your trek. The 3-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari from Rwanda is an all-inclusive package priced at USD 1390 per person.

How to Book Your Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Experience

Booking your Bwindi gorilla trekking adventure begins with securing a gorilla permit. These permits, essential for your trek, are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

• For tourists arriving via Entebbe: It’s recommended to purchase your permits from UWA’s headquarters in Kampala.
• For those arriving via Kigali, Rwanda: You can purchase your permits directly from UWA’s Kisoro branch, located just 1-2 hours away from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we make the booking process simple and seamless for you. Once you confirm your preferred dates, you can reach out to us via email or WhatsApp. We will first reserve your permits online and then send you an invoice. After you make the payment, we will purchase your gorilla permits immediately, sending you the scanned copies for your records and peace of mind.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry months, which are generally from January, February and June to early September. During these months, the trails are easier to navigate and the vegetation is less dense, allowing for clearer sightings of the gorillas.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Wondering what to wear for your trek? Here’s a helpful list:

• Long-sleeve sweater: The weather can be chilly in the mornings.
• 2 pairs of long trousers: Protection against thorns and the elements.
• Waterproof hiking boots: The trails can be muddy and slippery.
• Hat and sunglasses: Optional but they can protect you from the sun or rain.
• Camera and extra batteries: Capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments (remember to turn the flash off).
• Binoculars: Perfect for spotting birds and other wildlife in the dense forest.
• Gardening gloves: Useful for gripping branches during the trek.
• Raincoat: Since the forest is a rainforest, rain can be unpredictable.
• Mosquito repellent: To protect against insects in the forest.
• Sunscreen: Helps avoid sunburn on hot days (optional, depending on the season).

Color tips: Avoid wearing bright colors, as they might startle the gorillas. Black and blue should also be avoided as they attract Tsetse flies. Stick to neutral tones to blend into the environment.
