Budget Gorilla Trip to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park

Planning a Budget Gorilla Trip to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park

If you’re looking to experience the wonders of Rwanda on a budget, Volcanoes National Park should be at the top of your list. Located in the northeastern part of the country, in the small town of Musanze, this park is home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and countless other wildlife species. Volcanoes National Park is one of the oldest and most famous national parks in Africa, offering a unique combination of wildlife, culture and breathtaking landscapes.

Known as Parc Des Volcans in French and Pariki Yigihugu y’ibirungu in Kinyarwanda, the park is a vital part of Rwanda’s tourism and conservation efforts. Managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), Volcanoes National Park is a part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. These volcanoes, along with the park’s rich biodiversity, make it a top destination for eco-tourism in East Africa.

The park was established primarily to protect the endangered mountain gorillas that reside here but it’s also home to golden monkeys, over 300 species of birds and various other wildlife. It shares borders with Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, which has fostered cross-border conservation efforts for these iconic primates.

Top Budget-Friendly Activities in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla Trekking: A Must-Do Experience

Gorilla trekking is the highlight of any trip to Volcanoes National Park. To join a gorilla trek, you’ll need to spend at least one night near the park, ideally at Kinigi, where trekking begins. There are 10 habituated gorilla families in the park and each day, only 8 visitors per family are allowed to participate in the trek. This ensures a more personal and respectful experience with these incredible creatures.

Gorilla trekking takes place year-round and although the trek can range from 30 minutes to several hours, the chances of seeing the gorillas are 99%. You’ll be guided by professional trackers, guides and park rangers who will ensure your safety while providing fascinating insights into the gorillas’ behavior.

A gorilla trekking permit costs USD $1,500, which includes a one-hour viewing experience with the gorillas. Despite its cost, the experience of seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Trek Africa Gorillas can help you book a budget-friendly trek that fits your schedule and budget.

Golden Monkey Tracking: Affordable Wildlife Viewing

Golden monkey tracking is another incredible experience in Volcanoes National Park. These rare and beautiful monkeys live in the bamboo forests of the park and there are two habituated golden monkey communities that can be visited daily. Each group has around 80 members and visitors can spend one hour with them.

The permit for golden monkey tracking costs USD $100, making it a more affordable option compared to gorilla trekking. The trek begins at the park headquarters at 7:00 am with a briefing on the dos and don’ts of the activity. You’ll then follow the guides into the forest, where you may need to walk anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the location of the monkeys. Once you find them, you can watch and interact with them for an hour before returning to the park headquarters.

Visit Dian Fossey’s Tomb and Take a Scenic Hike

Another fascinating activity in Volcanoes National Park is visiting the tomb of Dian Fossey, the famous American primatologist who dedicated her life to the conservation of mountain gorillas. The hike to her tomb is a rewarding experience and offers a deeper connection to the park’s history.

The hike is approximately 1 hour (2,500m – 3,000m) and takes you through the lush forests of the park to the Karisoke Research Center. Dian Fossey’s work in the park, including her research and conservation efforts, played a major role in saving mountain gorillas from extinction. She was tragically killed by poachers and she was later buried in the park. The memorial is a tribute to her passion for gorilla conservation and visiting it is a profound experience for anyone interested in wildlife protection.

Discover the rich and vibrant culture of Rwanda with a visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, located just outside Volcanoes National Park. Starting your adventure from Cyanika Border, you’ll experience firsthand the fascinating history and traditions of the local people.

In the past, the locals lived in the forest and even participated in the poaching of endangered species. However, they were later relocated and organized into a peaceful village, where they now offer visitors an immersive cultural experience. Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, situated in Nyabigoma, Kinigi, Musanze District, Northern Province, is a place where you can interact with the locals and learn about their way of life.

During your visit, you’ll have the chance to participate in traditional activities, witness local dances, explore cultural artifacts and discover the unique heritage that has been passed down through generations.
