Discover Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Its Gorilla Trekking Sectors
Bwindi Forest National Park, located in the southern part of Uganda, borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s one of the world’s only two national parks where you can trek and see Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. Bwindi is home to over half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas, making it the best place for gorilla trekking in Africa.
The park is divided into four sectors where you can enjoy the gorilla tracking experience: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo. Each sector is home to different habituated gorilla families, which are led by a dominant silverback. To trek with these incredible creatures, you must have a valid gorilla permit for the day of your trek. Since only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family each day, permits sell out quickly, so booking in advance is essential.
Understanding the Cost of Bwindi Gorilla Safaris
The cost of a Bwindi gorilla safari varies depending on several factors such as the sector you choose, accommodation type and the season you’re traveling in. A typical gorilla trekking day in Uganda starts at 7:00 AM with a briefing on the guidelines for trekking and safety. After the briefing, you’ll be guided into the forest by park rangers, guides and trackers to find the gorillas. Once you locate them, you’ll be allowed to spend one hour with the gorillas, observing them in their natural habitat. Afterward, you’ll return to the starting point to receive a certificate of successful trekking.
Since gorillas share 95% of human DNA, watching them in the wild is a truly unforgettable experience. Due to conservation efforts, only 8 visitors are allowed per habituated family each day. Minors under 15 years old are not permitted to trek as they may pose a risk to the gorillas and the forest environment.
Gorilla Permit Prices for Bwindi Trekking
Gorilla permits are crucial when planning your Bwindi gorilla safari. The cost for a Bwindi gorilla trekking permit is as follows:
- USD 800 per person for Non-Foreign Residents
- USD 700 per person for Foreign Residents
- Shs. 300,000 for East African Citizens
For those interested in the gorilla habituation experience, which allows you to spend four hours with the gorillas, the costs are:
- USD 1500 per person for Non-Foreign Residents
- USD 1000 per person for Foreign Residents
- Shs. 750,000 per person for East African Citizens
Please note that while Uganda has a large number of permits, they often sell out quickly, especially during high season (January, February, July, August, September and December). When you contact us about your desired trek dates, we will check the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s online system for availability. If permits are available, we’ll send you an invoice for payment. Once payment is received, we will secure your permits and send you a booking receipt to confirm your trek.
