If you’re planning to trek mountain gorillas in Ruhija and want a completely private experience, the good news is, yes, it is absolutely possible to block all permits in advance and trek the Ruhija gorillas exclusively on your own or with your private group. Ruhija, located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is home to four gorilla families: Bitukura, Mukiza, Kyaguriro and Oruzogo. This region, perched at over 2,350 meters above sea level, is known for its cooler climate, making it the coldest sector in Bwindi. While gorilla trekking is the main highlight, Ruhija also offers excellent hiking and nature walks, including trails like the Rwamunyonyi Peak trek.

Important Tips for Planning a Private Ruhija Gorilla Trek

1. Booking All Gorilla Permits in Advance

To ensure that you have the exclusive experience you’re looking for, it’s essential to book and secure all the gorilla permits in advance. Ruhija has four gorilla families open for trekking and only 32 permits are available daily. We highly recommend booking your permits 3-4 months ahead of your trek, especially during peak seasons, as permits tend to sell out fast.

2. Securing Exclusive Lodge Accommodation

For a fully immersive and comfortable experience, it’s crucial to secure exclusive accommodation at a lodge in Ruhija. Here are some options for your stay:

• Luxury Lodges: Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge, Bakiga Lodge
• Budget Options: Broadbill Tented Camp, Trekkers Tavern Cottages, Agandi Eco Lodge

Alternatively, you may choose to stay in the nearby Buhoma sector and trek gorillas in Ruhija. Lodges in Buhoma include:

• Buhoma Lodge
• Bwindi Lodge
• Mahogany Springs Lodge
• Silverback Lodge

Booking your lodge in advance ensures you’ll have a private and comfortable base for your trek.

3. Comfortable Travel to Ruhija

To make your journey to Ruhija as smooth as possible, we recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, which is perfect for the rough terrain. Alternatively, you can fly to Kihihi Airstrip, which is just a short 1-2 hour drive from Ruhija. This option cuts down on the long drive from Entebbe or Kampala (which takes around 8-9 hours), giving you more time to relax and enjoy the adventure.

How to Get to Ruhija Sector for Gorilla Trekking

By Air:

The fastest way to reach Ruhija is by air. AeroLink, a domestic airline, offers scheduled and charter flights to Kihihi Airstrip. From there, you’ll be picked up by our professional guide and driven to your lodge in just about 1 hour.

By Road:

You can also drive to Ruhija from Entebbe/Kampala. The journey takes approximately 8-9 hours and passes through Kabale. Alternatively, you can access the park from Kigali, Rwanda, which is around 4-5 hours by car.

What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Wondering what to wear for your gorilla trekking adventure in Ruhija? We’ve put together a helpful guide on the essentials to pack for a comfortable and enjoyable trek:

• Long-sleeve Sweater: The temperature in the park can be chilly, so bring a warm sweater to stay cozy.
• Two Pairs of Long Trousers: Ideal for protection against the dense forest vegetation and insects.
• Waterproof Hiking Boots: A sturdy pair of waterproof boots is essential to navigate through muddy and slippery trails.
• Hat & Sunglasses: Depending on the weather, a hat and sunglasses may be helpful, though this is optional.
• Camera & Extra Batteries: Capture unforgettable memories during your trek! Don’t forget extra batteries, as photography is a highlight. Always keep your flash turned off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
• Binoculars: Perfect for spotting the diverse birdlife and other wildlife in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
• Gardening Gloves: Useful when gripping trees or branches during your trek to maintain balance.
• Raincoat: Since Bwindi is a rainforest, rain is often unpredictable. A raincoat will help you stay dry and comfortable.
• Mosquito Repellent: Protect yourself from insect bites in the forest by applying repellent.
• Sunscreen: Depending on the time of year, it may get hot, so sunscreen can help prevent sunburns.
• Neutral Colors: Avoid wearing bright or dark colors like black and blue, which can either scare the gorillas or attract tsetse flies. Opt for neutral tones that blend into the environment.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

The ideal time for trekking gorillas in Ruhija is during the dry months, specifically January, February and June to early September.
