Can I Trek Gorillas Exclusively Alone?

Can I Trek Gorillas Exclusively Alone?

Are you dreaming of an exclusive, private gorilla trekking experience in Africa? If so, you’re in the right place! This guide will help you plan and book your gorilla trek in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, ensuring you get the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences and while it requires a bit of investment, effort and time, it’s well worth it. Trekking through the forest, braving thick vegetation, crossing rivers and swamps—these challenges are part of the allure. Whether you’re in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo, encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is an experience you’ll never forget.

And yes, you can trek gorillas exclusively on your own! Although gorilla trekking typically involves hiking with a group, there are ways to arrange a private trek where you’ll be the sole person or group in the presence of the gorillas. It’s the ultimate personalized experience, allowing you to connect with these incredible animals without distractions.

While the trek itself can be physically demanding—requiring a good level of fitness due to the tough terrain—it’s an opportunity to experience something few others ever will. And for those who want a more immersive experience, Gorilla Habituation is a great option. This experience allows you to spend four hours with the gorillas, compared to the standard one-hour encounter during the usual trek.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be done in three incredible countries in Africa: Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. Each of these countries hosts national parks that are home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas.

• Uganda:
  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
• Rwanda:
  • Volcanoes National Park
• Congo:
  • Virunga National Park (for Mountain Gorillas)
  • Kahuzi Biega National Park (for Lowland Gorillas)

To trek in any of these parks, you’ll need a gorilla permit. Given the popularity of gorilla trekking, especially during peak season (June to September), it’s highly recommended to book your trek at least 5 months in advance.
