Can You Block Permits and Trek the Rushegura Gorilla Family Exclusively?

The Rushegura Gorilla Family is one of the most sought-after groups to track in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and it’s entirely possible to trek this family exclusively with Trek Africa Gorillas. This family split from the Habinyanja Gorilla Family in 2002 when the dominant silverback, Mwirima, left after a power struggle with his brother Rwansigazi. Mwirima took 7 members with him and although he has since passed, the group is now led by a blackback. The family has grown to more than 19 members and is known for crossing the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo frequently.

Tracking the Rushegura family is relatively easy, as the trail starts just 15 minutes from the park headquarters in Mukono.

Can You Book an Exclusive Trek with the Rushegura Gorilla Family?

Yes, you can absolutely block all the permits and trek the Rushegura Gorilla Family exclusively with Trek Africa Gorillas. By securing all the permits for that day, you’ll have a private encounter with the gorillas, whether you’re traveling alone or with a small group.

• Permit Prices:
  • USD 800 for foreign non-residents
  • USD 700 for foreign residents
  • UGX 300,000 for East African citizens

Each permit allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas. Since Rushegura Gorilla Family has 8 permits available every day, you’ll need to block all 8 permits if you wish to have an exclusive trek. That means paying for all 8 permits—totaling USD 5,600 for foreign non-residents—to ensure you’ll be the only ones on the trek that day.

Important Tips for Booking an Exclusive Gorilla Trek

1. Book All Gorilla Permits Early

To guarantee your exclusive trek with the Rushegura family, you’ll need to book all 8 permits in advance. Gorillas permits are in high demand, especially during peak seasons, so we recommend securing your permits 3 to 4 months prior to your trekking date. You can pay for the permits in full or with a deposit of 30%, 70% or 100%.

2. Choose Accommodation in Buhoma Sector

When trekking exclusively, it’s important to consider where you’ll stay. The Buhoma Sector offers a variety of accommodation options, ranging from budget to luxury. Notable choices include:

• Buhoma Lodge
• Bwindi Lodge
• Silverback Lodge – These lodges provide a comfortable base for your gorilla trek and allow you to stay in the heart of Bwindi’s wildlife-rich area.

3. Getting to Buhoma Sector

Traveling to Buhoma Sector can be an exciting part of your adventure. We recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser for a comfortable journey on Uganda’s often rugged roads. Alternatively, you can fly to Kihihi Airstrip, which is just a 2-hour drive from Buhoma, cutting down the travel time significantly from Entebbe or Kampala (8-9 hours). Buhoma is also easily accessible from Kigali, Rwanda, via the Katuna border—about a 4-5 hour drive.

Best Time of Year for an Exclusive Rushegura Gorilla Trek

The ideal time for trekking the Rushegura Gorilla Family is during the drier months, from January, February and June to early September. This is when the trails are more accessible and the dense vegetation is less of an obstacle, allowing for a clearer view of the gorillas.

How to Get to Buhoma Sector: Travel Options

By Air:

Traveling by air to Buhoma is a quicker and more comfortable option. Aero Link, a domestic airline, offers scheduled and charter flights to Kihihi Airstrip, which is about a 1-hour drive from Buhoma. Upon arrival, our professional guide will meet you and take you to your lodge. Please note that Aero Link has a baggage limit of 15 kg per person, with an additional fee of $3 per extra kilogram. Children under 2 years fly for free and those over 12 years are charged 70% of the adult fare.

By Road:

You can also reach Buhoma by road. The journey from Entebbe/Kampala takes around 8-9 hours, passing through Kabale before reaching the park. Alternatively, you can travel from Kigali, Rwanda, which takes about 4-5 hours. Another scenic option is to travel via Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, which also provides a unique safari experience.

What to Pack for Trekking the Rushegura Gorilla Family

If you’re planning an exclusive trek with the Rushegura Gorilla Family, you may be wondering what to wear. Proper clothing and gear will ensure you’re comfortable and prepared for your adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Here’s a helpful list of what to pack:

• Long-Sleeve Sweater: The weather can get chilly in the forest, especially in the mornings, so pack a warm sweater or jacket.
• Two Pairs of Long Trousers: Wear lightweight, breathable pants that will protect your legs as you trek through dense vegetation.
• Waterproof Hiking Boots: The trails can be muddy and slippery, so waterproof, sturdy hiking boots are essential.
• Hat and Sunglasses (optional): Depending on the weather, a hat and sunglasses can provide protection from the sun.
• Camera & Extra Batteries: Don’t forget your camera to capture memories of your trek and be sure to bring extra batteries (as charging may not be available on the go). Always turn off your flash when photographing gorillas.
• Binoculars: For birdwatching and spotting other primates in the forest, binoculars will come in handy.
• Gardening Gloves: These are helpful for gripping onto trees or branches while navigating through the forest.
• Raincoat: Since Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a rainforest, the weather can change unexpectedly. A raincoat will keep you dry in case of a downpour.
• Mosquito Repellent: As the forest is home to various insects, it’s important to carry mosquito repellent to protect yourself from bites.
• Sunscreen: While the forest is often shaded, certain seasons can be sunny. Sunscreen will protect your skin from sunburns.
• Neutral Colors: Avoid wearing bright colors, as they may startle or scare the gorillas. Black and blue are also not recommended since they attract Tsetse flies. Stick to neutral, earthy tones.
