Can You Exclusively Trek the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family? — Yes, you can trek the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family exclusively with the help of Trek Africa Gorillas! This option allows you or your travel group to have an intimate encounter with these fascinating mountain gorillas without sharing the experience with other visitors.

About the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family in Bwindi

The Kyaguriro Gorilla Family was first habituated in 1999, initially set aside for research purposes. It was one of the oldest research groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, providing valuable insights into gorilla behavior and social dynamics. The original group had more than 20 members, led by a dominant silverback named Rukina. Sadly, Rukina passed away after being struck by lightning. His passing led to a power struggle and the group eventually split in 2016 due to conflicts between two silverbacks, Mukiza and Rukara.

Now, the Kyaguriro family is divided into two sub-groups:

• Kyaguriro A: Consists of around 10 members.
• Kyaguriro B (also known as the Mukiza Gorilla Family): Initially had about 10 members as well.

How to Book an Exclusive Gorilla Trekking Experience

If you are interested in a private trek with the Kyaguriro gorilla family, Trek Africa Gorillas can help you secure all the necessary permits. By doing this, you will have the rare opportunity to experience an exclusive encounter with the gorillas, either as an individual or with your travel group alone.

To block the permits, you can choose one of the following payment options:

1. 100% Payment: Pay in full to secure all permits upfront.
2. 70% Payment: Make a partial payment of 70% in advance.
3. 30% Payment: Reserve the permits with a 30% down payment.

Each permit costs:

• $800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• $700 for Foreign Residents
• UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens

Since the Kyaguriro family has 8 permits available per day, you would need to purchase all 8 permits if you want an exclusive trek. This would amount to $5,700 for foreign non-residents. The permits grant you one hour of interaction with the gorilla family.

Important Tips for Planning Your Exclusive Trek

1. Book Permits Well in Advance

To secure an exclusive trek with the Kyaguriro gorilla family, you need to reserve all 8 permits well in advance. This is especially important during the high season, as permits tend to sell out quickly. We recommend booking 3 to 4 months prior to your intended travel date. Contact us at Trek Africa Gorillas and we will assist you with the entire booking process.

2. Choose Private Lodging in the Ruhija Sector

When planning your exclusive trek, it’s a good idea to book a lodge exclusively for your group in the Ruhija sector, where the Kyaguriro family resides. There are several accommodation options available:

• Luxury Lodges: Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge, Bakiga Lodge
• Nearby Options in Buhoma: Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Lodge, Silverback Lodge

Booking a lodge in advance ensures that you have a comfortable and private stay throughout your trip.

3. Travel Options to Ruhija for Your Gorilla Trek

For a smooth journey, we recommend traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser. The roads leading to Ruhija can be rugged and a 4×4 vehicle provides both comfort and safety.

Travel Options:

• By Air: You can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi Airstrip, which is the closest airstrip to Ruhija. This reduces the travel time significantly, with only a 2-hour drive from Kihihi Airstrip to your lodge.
• By Road: If you prefer to travel by road, it’s an 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Ruhija, passing through Kabale town. Alternatively, you can reach Ruhija from Kigali, Rwanda, via the Katuna border in about 4-5 hours.
• Via Queen Elizabeth National Park: Another scenic route is through Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, known for its tree-climbing lions.

What to Wear for an Exclusive Gorilla Trek

Planning a trek to see the Kyaguriro gorilla family on an exclusive visit? Here’s a guide on what to wear and pack to ensure you’re comfortable and well-prepared for your adventure:

• Long-Sleeved Sweater: The park can get chilly, so a warm, long-sleeved sweater is a must.
• Two Pairs of Long Trousers: These will protect your legs from thorny bushes and keep you warm.
• Waterproof Hiking Boots: The terrain can be rough and muddy, so sturdy, waterproof boots are essential for stability and comfort.
• Hat and Sunglasses: Depending on the weather, these can provide sun protection but they are optional.
• Camera and Extra Batteries: Capture the incredible moments with the gorillas. Make sure your camera has a silent mode—always keep the flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
• Binoculars: A great addition for spotting the various bird species and other wildlife in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
• Gardening Gloves: These protect your hands when holding onto trees or branches during the trek.
• Raincoat: Bwindi is a rainforest and showers can occur unexpectedly. A raincoat will keep you dry and comfortable.
• Mosquito Repellent: The forest has various insects, so carrying insect repellent is advisable to protect yourself.
• Sunscreen: Optional but recommended if it’s sunny, to prevent sunburn.
• Neutral-Colored Clothing: Avoid bright colors, as they can alarm the gorillas. Also, steer clear of black or blue clothing, as these colors attract tsetse flies. Neutral shades like green, brown or khaki are ideal.
