Can You Trek the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family Alone? – Exclusive Gorilla Trekking with the Muchunguzi Family in Bwindi

Can You Trek the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family Alone? — Yes, you can trek the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family exclusively on your own through Trek Africa Gorillas. Located in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Muchunguzi group has an interesting history. It originally split from the Bweza Gorilla Family and, despite efforts to reunite, it became an independent group open for public trekking. Named “Muchunguzi,” meaning savior, this family offers a unique and thrilling experience for visitors keen to observe these majestic primates up close.

How to Trek the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family Exclusively Alone

If you’re planning a private trek of the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family, you can reserve all the permits for this group. This exclusive experience allows you to enjoy a private encounter with the gorillas, whether you’re traveling solo or with a group. To block all the permits for a specific day, you need to book and pay in advance. Here’s a breakdown of the costs per gorilla permit:

• USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• USD 700 for Foreign Residents
• UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens

Since there are 8 permits available daily for the Muchunguzi group, booking them all (USD 5,600 for non-residents) guarantees a private trek, giving you the rare opportunity to spend an hour with the gorillas without other tourists.

Essential Tips for Booking Your Private Gorilla Trek

1. Book Permits in Advance

To ensure a private trek, it’s essential to secure all 8 permits in advance. We recommend booking at least 3 to 4 months ahead, especially if you plan to visit during the high season when permits are in high demand. You can pay either 100%, 70% or 30% upfront to reserve your permits. Contact us for assistance in securing your permits and planning your exclusive gorilla trekking experience.

2. Choose Exclusive Lodge Accommodations in Rushaga

For a seamless and comfortable experience, consider staying at a lodge in the Rushaga sector. There are a few options for luxury accommodations, such as:

• Four Gorillas Lodge
• Gorilla Safari Lodge
• Gorilla Valley Lodge

If you prefer staying nearby in Nkuringo, options include:

• Gorilla Heights Lodge

Booking a lodge exclusively for your group adds an extra touch of privacy and luxury to your safari.

3. Comfortable Travel to Rushaga

Traveling comfortably is key to enjoying your trek. We recommend using 4×4 Land Cruisers for the journey to Rushaga, ensuring a smooth ride on the often bumpy roads. Alternatively, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip, which is just a 2-hour drive from Rushaga, cutting down the 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala. Another convenient option is accessing Rushaga from Kigali, Rwanda, via the Cyanika border, which takes about 4-5 hours by road.

How to Get to Rushaga for Your Muchunguzi Trek

By Air

Flying is the quickest way to get to Rushaga. Aerolink offers domestic flights from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, the closest airstrip to Rushaga. From Kisoro, our professional guide will pick you up and drive you to your lodge in Rushaga, which is about an hour’s drive away.

By Road

Rushaga can be reached by road from Entebbe/Kampala, which takes about 8-9 hours. The drive takes you through the scenic landscapes of Kabale before reaching Rushaga. Alternatively, you can access Rushaga from Kigali, Rwanda, via the Cyanika border. This route is shorter, taking around 4-5 hours.

Best Time to Visit the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family

The best time for trekking the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family is during the dry seasons, which are from January to February and June to early September. During these months, the trails are less muddy, making it easier to hike and the vegetation is less dense, offering clearer views of the gorillas.

What to Wear for Trekking the Muchunguzi Gorilla Family

Sturdy, waterproof boots are essential for navigating the uneven, muddy terrain of the rainforest.
4. Hat and Sunglasses (Optional)
Depending on the weather, a hat and sunglasses can help shield you from the sun.
5. Camera and Spare Batteries
Capture every moment of your trek! Just remember to keep the flash off when photographing the gorillas.
