Celebrate Christmas on Safari in Tanzania: Your Ultimate Guide

Celebrate Christmas on Safari in Tanzania — Are you considering spending your Christmas holiday on safari in Tanzania? This beautiful country offers an incredible experience with its diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. From the Big 5 and fascinating primates to hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania is the perfect destination for a Christmas safari. One of the highlights of your holiday could be witnessing the Great Migration from the comfort of a luxury camp. Here are the top four national parks in Tanzania to visit for an unforgettable Christmas safari:

1. Serengeti National Park – Celebrate Christmas with the Great Wildebeest Migration

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly one of the best places to spend Christmas in Tanzania. As the oldest and one of the largest parks in the country, the Serengeti is famed for its incredible wildlife, including the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, which is a must-see event. This migration, which occurs between June and October, involves over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras making the perilous 3,000-mile journey across Tanzania and Kenya. It’s a life-and-death struggle as they face predators like lions, hyenas and cheetahs along the way.

Best Time to Visit for the Great Migration

While the migration occurs between June and October, visiting Serengeti during Christmas allows you to witness the herds’ return journey towards the southern parts of the park, just before the rains start. The river crossings are particularly spectacular during the dry months of August and September.

What to See in Tarangire

• Baobab Trees: Tarangire is famous for its iconic baobab trees, some of which are thousands of years old. These towering trees are said to have been punished by the gods for moving across the earth, which is why they now grow with their roots pointing skyward. A visit to these trees with a knowledgeable guide offers insight into their fascinating history and cultural significance.

When is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round destination but the best time to visit is typically from December to February and June to October. These months are drier and more comfortable for safaris, making it easier to spot wildlife. The rainy seasons from March to May and November can bring lush landscapes but also more challenging conditions for travel.
