Climbing Mount Longonot

Climbing Mount Longonot: Your Ultimate Hiking Adventure in Kenya

Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano located in Kenya’s stunning Rift Valley region. It last erupted in the 1800s and remains one of the most captivating mountains to climb in Africa. The hike takes about 4 to 5 hours, offering a well-maintained trail that leads you to breathtaking views of Lake Naivasha, as well as the abundant wildlife and birdlife in the surrounding area. This trek is not overly challenging, making it accessible for many hikers. Plus, you can hire a porter for a small fee to help carry your luggage, so you can fully enjoy the scenic journey.

Best Time to Hike Mount Longonot: Weather, Trails & Tips

Like much of East Africa, Kenya experiences an equatorial climate, making it ideal for hiking year-round. However, the best time to climb Mount Longonot is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February. During this period, the trails are drier, making the hike easier and more accessible. Although the lower areas might be warm and dry, be prepared for occasional rain at higher elevations. It’s always a good idea to pack the right hiking gear to stay comfortable.

In addition to Mount Longonot, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy in Kenya before or after your hike, such as wildlife viewing in Masai Mara or primate tracking like Gorilla trekking, Chimpanzee tracking and Golden Monkey tracking.

What to Pack for Climbing Mount Longonot

Clothing

For a comfortable hike, bring lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing like long-sleeve shirts to protect yourself from the sun. Depending on how long your trip is, pack enough clothes to cover half your hike. You should also carry pants that are flexible for climbing and trekking. Waterproof gear is highly recommended to prepare for the occasional rain.

Hiking Boots

A good pair of hiking boots is essential for any trek. These boots are specially designed to provide support for uphill climbs and to protect your feet from soggy ground. Make sure your boots are waterproof and breathable, as they will keep you comfortable throughout your hike.

Sandals

After a long day of hiking, treat your feet to some relaxation with a fresh pair of sandals. These are perfect for wearing around camp or when you need to unwind after a day’s trek.

Rain Jacket

Mount Longonot’s weather can be unpredictable, so a rain jacket is a must-have. It will help protect your belongings and camera gear if you get caught in a downpour. If you don’t already have one, you can easily buy a rain jacket in Kenya.

Socks

Socks are important to keep your feet dry and free from blisters. You’ll need to wear moisture-absorbing socks, especially since it can get cold at higher altitudes. Pack extra pairs to stay comfortable throughout your hike.

Backpack

A durable and comfortable backpack is essential for carrying your gear during the hike. Since most hikes span multiple days, you’ll need a bag with enough space to fit all your necessities.

Sleeping Bag and Tent

For multi-day hikes, you’ll need a sleeping bag and a tent. Not all areas will offer accommodation and temperatures can be chilly, so camping is often the best option.

Snacks

Since meals are served at specific times, having snacks on hand is a great way to keep your energy up throughout the day. Pack enough to last the duration of your hike.

Sunscreen, Hat and Sunglasses

Protect yourself from sunburns and heat by using sunscreen and wearing a hat and sunglasses.

Water Filter

Although you’ll pass streams along the way, it’s important to carry a water purifier or filter to ensure the water you drink is safe.

Gloves

To keep your hands safe from cuts and to regulate your body temperature, pack a pair of gloves. These will protect your hands during the hike, especially if you’re navigating rocky terrain.

Headlamp or Flashlight

Since there is no electricity in the hiking areas, a headlamp or flashlight is a necessity. You’ll need it for nighttime navigation, especially if you start your hike early or return to camp late.

Face Towel

A small face towel is perfect for wiping away sweat or keeping you fresh during the hike.

First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen during any hiking adventure, so it’s important to carry a well-stocked first aid kit. Ensure it contains bandages, painkillers, blister treatments and other essential medical supplies.

Camera Gear

With stunning views and unforgettable scenery, you’ll want to capture every moment. Bring extra batteries and memory cards to ensure you don’t run out of storage or power on your camera.
