Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two main locations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks offer exceptional opportunities to see the critically endangered mountain gorillas. You can easily access these parks by flying into Entebbe International Airport and traveling overland to the parks or you can fly directly to Kisoro Airstrip (for Mgahinga) or Kihihi Airstrip (for Bwindi’s northern sector). Alternatively, fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and drive to the parks via the Cyanika or Katuna border (just 4-5 hours).

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi is during Uganda’s drier months, from December to February and June to early September. During these months, the weather is mild with less rainfall, making it easier to trek through the forest and spot the gorillas. However, even in the rainy season, gorillas can still be seen, as they tend to stay close to food sources, making for a more accessible trek. Regardless of the season, gorilla trekking in Uganda is a year-round activity with a high success rate of gorilla sightings—over 90% of visitors get to see the gorillas.
