In this article, we’ll explain how you can enjoy both experiences and how Trek Africa Gorillas can help you plan and book the perfect combination of gorilla trekking and a Zanzibar beach safari.

How to Combine Gorilla Trekking in Uganda with a Zanzibar Beach Safari

There are several ways to combine gorilla trekking in Uganda with a beach holiday in Zanzibar. You can start by trekking the gorillas in Uganda and then fly to Zanzibar for a relaxing beach break afterward. Alternatively, you can begin your journey in Zanzibar and end it with an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience. Flights between Uganda and Zanzibar are convenient, with several airlines like Kenya Airways, Rwandair and Airlink offering connections between the two destinations.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done in four sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. Buhoma and Ruhija are in the northern part of the park, while Rushaga and Nkuringo are in the south. The trek can be paired with game viewing if you visit the northern sectors, as they are close to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Meanwhile, the southern sectors are near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, known for its mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.

Each sector has its own habituated gorilla families and the Rushaga sector is particularly famous for having the highest number of families.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost?

A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs USD 800 per person for Foreign Non-Residents, USD 700 for East African Residents and USD 80 for East African Citizens. This permit allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas after tracking them through the dense forest.

Booking Your Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda

To secure your spot for gorilla trekking in Uganda, you’ll need to purchase your gorilla permit in advance. Permits are available through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), either in their Kampala office or Kisoro branch. If you’re arriving via Entebbe, it’s recommended to purchase your permits through the Kampala office. If you’re coming from Kigali, the Kisoro branch is closer to Bwindi.

Trek Africa Gorillas can assist with booking your permits in advance and on short notice. Once you confirm your travel dates with us, we will reserve your permits, send you an invoice for payment and once payment is received, we will immediately secure your permits and send you scanned copies for your records.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the drier months, which occur from January to February and June to early September. During these months, the weather is more favorable, making travel to the parks easier and providing better visibility since the vegetation is less dense. This is the perfect time to trek through the forest and have a clear view of the gorillas.

What to Wear During Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Wondering what to wear for your gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda? It’s essential to dress appropriately to ensure your comfort, safety and enjoyment throughout your trek in the lush forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here’s a guide on what to wear and bring:

1. Long-Sleeve Shirt/Sweater: The weather in the park can be chilly, especially in the mornings, so a long-sleeve shirt or sweater is ideal for warmth.
2. Long Trousers: Pack two pairs of durable, long trousers to protect your legs from thorns, insects and the forest’s rough terrain.
3. Waterproof Hiking Boots: The forest paths can be muddy and slippery, so sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must to ensure you have a safe and comfortable hike.
4. Hat & Sunglasses: Depending on the season, the weather can vary. If it’s sunny, a hat and sunglasses will protect you from the sun. These are optional but they can come in handy.
5. Camera & Extra Batteries: Capture the unforgettable moments of your gorilla encounter. Remember to bring extra batteries, as you’ll want to preserve those memories. Be sure to keep your camera flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
6. Binoculars: Don’t miss the opportunity to observe the diverse wildlife in Bwindi, including its vast birdlife and other primates. Binoculars will give you a closer look.
7. Gardening Gloves: While trekking through the dense forest, gardening gloves can be helpful when holding onto branches and trees for support.
8. Raincoat: Since Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a tropical rainforest, rain is common and unpredictable. A lightweight, packable raincoat will keep you dry during a sudden downpour.
9. Mosquito Repellent: The forest is home to many insects, including mosquitoes, so bring along a repellent to keep yourself protected.
10. Sunscreen: While the weather can be cool, the sun can also be intense, especially during midday. A sunscreen with high SPF will help protect your skin from sunburns.
11. Neutral-Colored Clothing: Avoid wearing bright colors, as these can startle the gorillas. Also, steer clear of black and blue, as these colors attract Tsetse flies. Stick to earthy, neutral tones like green, brown or khaki.
