Combine Hiking Mount Elgon with Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Combine Hiking Mount Elgon with Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: The Ultimate Adventure

Discover the perfect blend of adventure and nature by combining a thrilling hike up Mount Elgon with a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience in Uganda. Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano, is one of Uganda’s most ancient and awe-inspiring landscapes, having erupted over 24 million years ago. Once Africa’s highest mountain, it now stands at 4,321 meters, making it the fourth tallest peak in East Africa.

Why Hike Mount Elgon?

Mount Elgon offers a unique hiking experience with its serene moorlands and vast caldera, a remarkable 40 km² crater. Unlike many summits where reaching the peak is the goal, the true adventure of Mount Elgon lies in descending into this stunning caldera. The mountain, which spans the Uganda-Kenya border, also boasts the largest volcanic base in the world and is home to the Bagisu and Sabiny tribes, who consider it sacred.

The mountain’s cool heights provide a refreshing escape from the hot plains below and its untouched wilderness is perfect for adventurers looking to experience nature in its purest form. Whether you’re exploring the dense forests or hiking along the peaceful moorlands, Mount Elgon offers a rare and rewarding experience.

Combine Hiking Mount Elgon with Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

While Mount Elgon offers its own unforgettable adventure, a visit to Uganda wouldn’t be complete without encountering the world-famous mountain gorillas. Combine your hike with a trek to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a chance to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

How to Combine Hiking Mount Elgon with Gorilla Trekking

There are multiple ways to combine hiking Mount Elgon with gorilla trekking. You can start your journey with the Mount Elgon hike and then drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga National Park for your gorilla trek. Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a must-do activity. Bwindi Forest, located in southwestern Uganda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are two of the only places in the world where you can see endangered mountain gorillas. These national parks are home to several habituated gorilla families, each offering an extraordinary experience for trekkers.

Gorilla trekking takes place in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. The Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, located in the northern part of Bwindi, are ideal for combining your trek with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Meanwhile, the southern sectors of Nkuringo and Rushaga are close to Mgahinga National Park, offering a fantastic combination of gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking.

What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking is an incredible journey into the wilds of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you’ll hike through dense jungle to find mountain gorillas. Permits for gorilla trekking cost USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for East African residents and USD 80 for East African citizens. Once you reach the gorillas, you’ll spend an hour observing these fascinating creatures in their natural environment.
