Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two spectacular national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You can easily reach these parks by flying into Entebbe International Airport, followed by a road trip of about 9-10 hours or a short flight to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips. Alternatively, you can fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and access the parks via the Cyanika or Katuna border—just a 4-5 hour journey from the border.
Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
The ideal time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season, from December to February and June to early September. These months offer clear skies and easier access to the parks, as vegetation is less dense. However, some prefer the rainy season (March to May and October to November), as the gorillas stay closer to their habitats and trekking can be slightly easier. Despite the weather, gorilla trekking is available year-round, so you’ll have a great chance of spotting these magnificent creatures.

The permit costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for East African residents and USD 80 for East African citizens. Once you confirm your travel dates, we will check availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and help secure your permit. We recommend booking your permit 3-5 months in advance, as there are only 288 permits available per day in Bwindi and they can sell out quickly.

A typical 3-day budget-friendly gorilla trekking safari costs about USD 1600 for a solo traveler and USD 1150 per person for a group of four, all-inclusive of transport, accommodation and the gorilla permit. Additional costs may include tips, visas, flights and alcoholic drinks.
